How do I move the crabitat down stairs?

Post by go_skiboard » Wed Oct 08, 2014 10:47 am

Hi everyone,

I have a 40g breeder tank upstairs and I need to move it to a different room downstairs. I have several crabs down molting, so I can't empty the tank. I know it probably weighs 250ish lbs (maybe more?) so it will take several people to lift. I'm concerned about the glass bottom breaking when we pick it up. I had an idea to slide it on to a sheet of wood or press-board and then gently lift high enough to put some 2x4 boards underneath and then lift it by the boards, would that work? Is there a better way? I appreciate any tips or suggestions!! I live in Miami and one of my tanks has been out on my 2nd story balcony, but the night temps are starting to dip into the low 70s and there is no power outlet on the balcony so I need to get them inside with a heat source...just gotta figure out how!

Moving a tank that heavy is going to be a risk, I think, regardless. I do agree the wood board method might work, but I'd see if anyone else has some suggestions too!

Thanks for the reply Yote! I hope others chime in with advice as well.

I'm with Yote, it is extremely risky and dangerous. I highly recommend running 2 tats, the 40gb and a new one downstairs, and just moving crabs out as is available. Then you can empty the 40gb and move it plain. You can start by scooping the sub out a little at a time, and just have 1-2 inches of sub when you move 1 crab. You can scoop in less inhabited places to begin with. You will progress faster than you expect, and your crabs will be moved in no time!
For the time being the crabs on the balcony might need heat or they can die from the night temps. A lamp and extension cord is the best i can offer you, but it will take some customization.
If you have the help and resources, yes put a board under, use that to lift and add a carrying piece under that. But carrying that much weight down stairs is very scary to me. The last thing you want is to drop or tilt a tank full of sub.
