HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hi there!

I've decided that this time around when I decorate my 'tat that I want to have some sort of theme to go by. I would absolutely love some ideas from you guys! I had been thinking (and it was brought up by another crabber here) that it would be neat to have all the names fit the theme that I chose.

These are what I've considered so far:

- Game of Thrones: But I figured that if I wanted my crabs to live that maybe this isn't a great idea
- Alice in Wonderland: Teacup and Teapot hides, some sort of tunnel/"hole" with access to a second level, and then someone on here brought up the idea of laminated cards!
- A general "once upon a time" theme: All the alice in wonderland stuff would still apply, along with any other sort of neat magical fairy tale ideas!

I'm really on the fence though. I'd love any other ideas or themes (or even pictures of your crabitats to use as inspo!)

I think I have seen your posts about putting a theme with your 'tat. I think it is a super cute idea

I know this is cheesy and lame, but obviously there is always the option of a beach theme

I think whatever you choose should reflect what you like, since you have to look at it everyday

Some theme ideas:
Music- names could be famous singers
Wizard of Oz- Not a lot of characters for names, but you could make up cute munchkin names
Farm- name them after farm animals!
outer space- you could do planet names, or names like Starlight and Nova, or names of constellations
Snoopy- obviously names from The Peanuts
Star Wars- names of characters

That's all I can think of right now. If I think of anymore I will defanitly post them for you.

singlemomwithcrab was actually the one who gave me the idea of laminating cards for the alice in wonderland theme! She does seem to be very creative

Game of Thrones would be epic!! I have a few crabs named after GoT characters, but then decided that may curse them to an early death.

There are so many good ideas here, I have no clue how I'm ever going to decide! I really appreciate all the help guys! I'm definitely going to scan through amazon and see what I can find! I really like the harry potter idea, too. I'm the worlds biggest fan of HP.

I love all the Game of Thrones support I'm getting. I would love to have a little crab, and a bigger one and name them Arya and Sandor. Of course I'd need a Tyrion, and a Jon, and Dany, and... and.. and..
Although, I'm with you megmaholm, on the idea of cursing them into an early death

I have Ancient Greece Theme. My crabs for the most part have Greek Gods, Goddesses and Heros names. I also have Pain and Panic from Disney's Hercules.

One other quick Idea would be crystals. I just found some really cool Geodes on Deltona and bought three. I'm going to send two into my son's first grade class to open there. So like a fanasty crystal mine with the seven dwarfs and Snow white

It's hard to tell for sure in writing but when reading this, you seem most excited about the Alice in Wonderland theme.

These are all really great ideas! Thanks everybody! I love the Geodes, they would look really neat in a crab tank! I also really love the Ancient Greek theme! It looks really great! I love all things Ancient Greece and Rome.

As the archaeologist here, I would suggest that you pick out an ancient culture and put ceramic sculptures in your tank! Sometimes I see fishtanks try to recreate things like this, but I think doing one particular destination by hand may look even nicer.

And as far as the beach theme goes… I always have dreamed of creating a habitat much like some of the beaches I saw in India. They had black sand and the shores were lined with ruins of old temples and Hindu gods. I always imagined on the outside of the tank I could put a couple of cutouts from old vintage Indian postcards with sanskrit writing on them. Maybe someday!

You could also do a shipwreck theme! Then each crab could be named after a pirate.

I have another one to throw at you. I just made a stop at Hobby Lobby and they have this line called "The Spring Shop" and I came across a bunch of Resin (crabby safe) decorations in a Fairy / Gnome theme....SOOSOOSOSOSOSOOOOOOO Cute.

They also had this one that I can't find on line that was a large mushroom with an operational door that would let a medium sized crabbie in/out. It was about 12" tall and 9" around.
There was so much more in the store than they have online.

Let's just say that if I was doing a new tank from scratch, I would be all over this like sand on a crabbie....

Love the gnome idea. I'd go for it.
