After a couple weeks of tweaking everything in my (daughter's) crabitat, we finally have proper conditions!
Temperature in the middle of the tat is 80 degrees daytime, 75 nighttime. Humidity is 85% as long as I have a wet towel over the lid, 65-70% without it. I have an Ultratherm heater on the back, above the substrate, a Zoomed uth on one side, also above the substrate. The tank is insulated on the back completely with foil and foam poster board, and around the substrate on the other three sides with foam poster board. My wire mesh lid I have layered a wet (run out so no leaking) towel, a layer of foil, a thick towel, and two baby blankets. It has been quite frustrating caring for the empty tank and getting everything set right, but we're there finally! Now we can get the crabs either Thursday or Saturday. The only thing I think we'll be looking for in the near-ish future would be some led lights for better viewing.

We knew about a month in advance we were getting them for my daughter's 5th birthday. We had an incident a couple years ago with fish not surviving - I knew nothing about tank cycling, etc. I showed my daughter a picture of a hermit crab and she says they're the cutest things ever, so we started on the journey. The only downfall is the closest place I've found with hermit crabs is 2.5 hours away, and no nearby adoptions either. The room the crabitat is in, is 10 degrees colder than the rest of the house, so I had to get a 20 degree temp boost. I'm so glad I found this site to help me in making sure they're going to be properly cared for.
