Usable Substrate?

Post by Asheka » Sat Mar 21, 2015 8:43 pm

So, I went through the stuff I still had from hermies before, and the few things I bought when I was thinking about getting them last year and apparently having a bag of EE in a closet for about 8 months does something funny looking...

Even my cat is confused  I'm assuming it's still safe to use? It's not hard, just like all the air got sucked out of it or something :?

I apparently also picked this up, but don't know if it's safe or worth using. You're supposed to soak it in so much water and it expands.

That's all eco-earth/EE/coconut husk/coco fiber/coir/etc. You can bake it to clean it if it smells funky. You can wet it with SW to deter mold growth, mix it with 5 parts playsand, and upgrade your tat!

The coco husk after reading about what it is actually it is completely different, it is chips of coco husk so I would not use that after I found out what it was. If you wanted it to use it in like a coco pit, you could do that and they might like to burrow in it. You could put it in a basket with suction cups to keep it on the glass.

So after you soak it there will be chips in it, like cedar chips?

I've never used it before, but the pictures make it look like it would.

I like having a chunkier substrate and so I do mix the cocohusk into my tank, but I know a lot of crabbers prefer to have a more uniform mixture so it's one of those things to use at your own risk.

It does work great for second levels, and I mixed some into my moss pit to give it more volume, stop it from getting packed down, and to give the crabs something extra to munch on. My crabs love the cocohusk/moss pit!

I think some mixed in the playsand/cocofiber substrate or used in second levels like Wode mentioned would be fine. I wouldn't recommend it as the only substrate though. Straight coco-husk (chunks/mulch) would probably make digging more difficult and I wouldn't think caves/tunnels would form well. Just thought I'd mention that for anyone who may be reading. :)

Oh, yes. I like the idea of having a little "play area" of it for them. Thanks!

The brick of cocohusk will not be "chippy". Is the same as the stuff in the bag, just compressed.

There's compressed cocofiber and then there's compressed cocohusk. One is the finer stuff most of us use and recommend. The other is chunky...a bit like mulch. The one in that pic looks like the chunky one to me.
