HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hi, all -- I have a 55 gal tank with 2 Black Back Land Crabs in it. They are not hermit crabs, but come from a similar habitat, so their care is similar to hermies'. I have learned a lot from the HCA & I thank you! I wanted to share something that works for me & hope it will be useful for somebody.

When setting up the tank, I looked for a ReptiFogger to keep the humidity up, but I couldn't find one. However, I did find a ReptiRain, which is similar. It sprays rather than fogs, but can also be programmed for interval and duration. From the main tank comes a single hose, which connects to a T junction, to which 2 hoses are attached, each with a spray end.

Anyway, when I first started using the RR, I wasn't happy about how it just sprayed in 2 locations. So, I got some more tubing and poked holes all along it and replaced the hoses. I plugged the ends rather than use the spray ends. It worked ok, but sprayed every which direction.

So, just yesterday, I got some 1/4" mini porous soaker hose & made a loop of it, which each end attached to the T junction. I used medium size binder clips to attach it to the lip of the tank all the way around. AND it works GREAT! At the programmed interval, there's a nice gentle rain dripping nicely into the substrate. My humidity stays at 80%!

Drip systems help humidity, but it is going to flood the substrate!

I have a false bottom in there to prevent that.

Wow thats cool. I was going to mention to watch out for flooding, but it sounds like you have it all sorted. I would love to see some pictures of your crabbies though, they sound rather interesting!

Definitely watch for flooding - I run a humidifier and have a false bottom, and it still flooded enough it heavily saturated the bottom inch or so of my sand.

That's great how you modified it, though! I'm nowhere near that clever
