HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hello all! I'm a new crab owner, and I've had my guys about 2 weeks now. One of them, Bumblebee, is down for a molt, and he seems to be under/near a wooden log that's positioned vertically.

Today I noticed that there is some mold growing on the log, and spread to some substrate next to it.

I'm pretty worried, because I know mold can be harmful to my crabs. But I'm nervous to take the log out and clean when my crab is molting.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do??

Mold is harmless to hermit crabs, but it can be bad for us, especially for humans who are allergic. You can scrape off what's on the log and the substrate for now while leaving it in place, and spritz a small amount of saltwater on just the spot that is molding. Ideally if you wanted to remove the mold you would remove the wood, sterilize it by boiling or baking, and then putting it back - but if you know he's nearby and there's risk of a cave collapse it's going to be important to wait until he's up or moved away from the area.
