substrate ratio
substrate ratio
its been long enough without cleaning the tank and i have been experimenting with straight sand and later straight ecoearth. In both i have had many successful molters and had no problems with the exception of a sick crab i picked up at a bad store. Actually i picked up a crab at another store that was overly stressed. When i brought it home i noticed that it was missing two or three legs. long story short he grew them back so YAY But now i wanted to try a mix of the two because i read somewhere it was the best sub. If that is incorrect please comment below. I also wanted to know the ratio i should use. for every one block of eco how many cups of sand. *and if a picture of the finished mix could be posted it would be greatly appreciated*
Who needs ductape when we have Eco-Earth?
Re: substrate ratio
There are many crabbers who recommend a 5:1 ratio of play sand to cocofiber. Others use straight play sand or straight cocofiber. And there are many who use varying mixes of those two - and sometimes with the addition of other things like leaf litter, moss, crushed oyster shells, etc.
I personally feel a mix of play sand and cocofiber makes for better tunneling. I don't fuss over exact ratios but I do like to keep it more play sand than cocofiber. The crabs do also end up mixing in moss, leaves, egg shell bits, and crushed oyster shells as they get dumped/spilled from pits/dishes.
It really comes down to what works best for your crabs and your area. For example, if you live in a very dry area, more cocofiber can help boost humidity.
Here's pics from my two tanks. Sorry for the flash.
I don't really remember exactly how many bags of sand I used or bricks of EE.
