I personally think it's fine if it fluctuates a bit in a pattern. For example in my tank I keep under tank heaters on the back of the tank but I also have a lamp which gets me the last 5 degrees I need to get to 80 for my straws. Every night before I got to bed I remove the lamp and put a blanket over the tank. This allows the tank every night to slowly drop back down to 75 by morning. I actually do this because I think it's good for them to have day/night cycles which are like what they would have in the wild. But that's just me, some people just feel it's better to keep it constant-and keeping temps/humidity stable certainly does keep crabs thriving.

If it's fluctuating randomly, if the temps fall outside the acceptable range then this kind if change I believe can actually be VERY harmful.

Did that answer your question?

Very bad! They need to always be above 70 degrees. Is your house that cold?

Do you have any photos of your crabitat? Last winter your tank was okay with the two heating pads - what has changed?

Maybe one of your UTH failed? Do they feel warm to the touch? Or maybe the thermometer?

What temperature is the room they're in? Can you bump the room temp up some if it's low?

It's good to hear from you again and I'm glad Dwebble and Rockwall are doing ok. Hopefully we can get that temp up for them! :)

If your apartment temp is 79 your tank should be well above 60, so that's weird. Are you sure your thermometer is reading correctly? Do you have another one you could try out just to check?

Glad your crabs are doing well, 2 years so far for Dwebble isn't bad at all! :)

Hi, Brittanybaby22! We haven't heard from you in quite a while so I'm glad to hear you've still got Dweeble and that he now has a friend :D .

As @megmaholm said, if the temperature in your house is 79 degrees, it doesn't seem likely that the tank is colder than that by more than a degree or two. Maybe your tank thermometer is getting old and is giving you false readings? If you're worried that the temperature is getting too low, you can always drape a lightweight blanket around the back and sides of the tank to boost the temperature inside.

I agree, it sounds like your thermometer is broken. Unless your tank is next to a very drafty window or door?
