HCA: Hermit Crab Association

I've seen where some here have added chia seeds to their tat. When I finally get to set up the new 75G, I'd like to add a "Crabby Jack's Snack Shack" in the tank with some sprouts of chia, bean sprouts, spinach, wheatgrass, etc.

Would this be acceptable?

Thinking about an acrylic divider to make sure the roots don't overtake the rest of the tank, but also gives me a place to put some pure EE as a soil.

Open to any and all suggestions. Probably won't be able to set up this new tank for a month or so...

That's awesome! Do you just grow it right into the substrate?

I do but I only use EE, I don't use sand.

Good deal. I use a 5-1 ratio, so I was going to make a section of just pure EE for this "garden." Have you thought about other sprouts?

I have not. I've got a 65 gallon with 13 crabs with 8 hidey huts and not a lot of room to grow more.

Usually what happens is I grow the chia and they will mow it down within about 3 weeks so then I get in and churn it up pull out the top layer, add more EE if I need to, clean the shells & water dishes, etc. And then start all over again! it is very time consuming. It takes me and hubby 4 hours to do it and do it right.

I stick to chia... You can search the old forums though, i know others have attempted it but idk if they were successful. My chia grows and grows then stops at about 3 in high then dies and decomposes (whatever the crabs haven't devoured). They love tromping through it though [FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

Millet and chia grow like mad in my tanks when I toss it in. The crabs eat it like little lawnmowers.

Chia and millet roots aren't long enough to overrun anything really.

As far as other plants, some crabbers have had success with using clay pots. (No potting soil, though unless it is 100% organic with no pesticides added.)
