Insulating a UTH

Hi, I have seen on here that one needs to insulate the uth heater. Someone told me what to use but not how to insulate the heater. Do you insulate the whole tank? Or just the uth? Does anyone have pictures I could see please? Thank you for your help.

Hi! First you want to make sure your heater is one that can be insulated, as many cannot be safely. Ultratherm and Flukers are safe to insulate for sure. Zoo-meds for sure are not safe to insulate as they can be a fire hazard. I honestly can't get a picture of mine because it is positioned against a wall, and I only have half done right now since its been summer, and temps where too high with it fully done. I just use packing tape on the insulation material whether it be cardboard, foam, foil, etc, and tape it over the heater. Basically its just there to help the heat travel in the right direction. (Towards the tank.)

If it's an ultra therm you can attach it to the back above the sub with packing tape or duct tape. Than use tin foil to insulate than card board over that and it should spread the heat out well in the intended area.

Ok thank you. Would thermal tape work ok too?

I believe so no 100 % sure of that's the kind that adds additional heat you may get to mu ch heat. But simple packing tape def works and tin foil.

Does this look right? The tank is on
It's side...I know it's too short for the tank, but it'll do. I've covered it with Reflectix and Reflectix Tape (someone on here mentioned it. It's used for pipes, and since Ultratherm can be insulated, I went ahead and did it...) I'm trying not to be a fire hazard here at my school...

Is it an ultra therm what i did was i put the foil all the way across the back to spread the heat out and cardboard over that across the whole back their supposed to be safe so should not be a fire hazard

Yeah it's the back. I had it sitting on the front so I could tape it easier...

It's a Bean Farm Ultratherm. I may put the Reflectix across the whole back, but there's this black paint on the back. I tried to use a razor blade to remove it, but no go. I didn't want to use mineral spirits, that smell never goes away!
