Excavator clay?
So in my research into different crabs someone suggested excavator clay for my red claws i had planned on getting. But im wondering if anyone has used it as a potential background for hermits? Its basically a sandy clay that can be molded into caverns and ledges then dries hard. My only concern would be the humidity levels of these guys. Just curious if its been used and the results. Just for background not as a substrate.

Re: Excavator clay?
The problem is crabs do best with 80% humidity, and clay is porous.
It will turn to mud.

Currently the caretaker for:
Six hermies in 37G bow front, and two more in a ten-gallon tank.
I build websites, and blog about ebooks.

Re: Excavator clay?
I'd be looking into chemical additives, like anti fungal stuff, or emulsifiers. I worry about chemical leeching in moist environments. It might be okay when dry or above the substrate, but will condensation, or contact with consistently damp sand pose a potential-some risk? Just a thought.
