How to mix this sub

Ok I got sand and those eco earth round blocks should I mix it up in the tank, or somewhere else? Any tips? Things to not do?

I mixed mine in a bowl a batch at a time but I've read of ppl doing it inside the tank

With my 10 and 20 g tats, I just mixed the 5:1 sand to EE in a bucket then placed in the tank. With my 55g - that was just going to be too much work, so I made a sub parfait as others had recommended with alternating layers of EE and sand (with the sand layer, I sprayed with dechlorinated water before the next EE layer)
