Do you need more than one Straw?

Post by Guest » Sun Feb 19, 2006 3:01 am

My best friend adopted her very first Straw the other day. Vatlentine is BEAUTIFUL! She is an adult, but young, as she is only a medium size crab.

Dianna didn't want a large Straw, and after reading about the fragility of the species, she almost didn't want one at all! But Valentine was just too hard to resist!

I know that hermits are happiest with members of their own species, but I have read that a lot of the HCA members only have one Straw. So my question is, should Dianna get a buddy for Valentine, or will she be content to socialize with her tankmates, which are PPs, Es & a Rug?

Well, in my opinion, you should *always* have atleast 2 of each species (that you own)

So she should get another ruggie and a straw. :)

I am with ossipi on this one, you should always have a minnumum of two of a particular species, preferably more than that.

I also agree...I have two little straws and while they roam with the others they sleep and hide together and sometimes follow eachother around the tank..I think they be lonely if I had just one.

I have had a Cav, without any sepcies of his own kind for 10 months now. He has 7 other friends but none of his same speices just because I can not find any more. He is often very active, and enjoys playing with the other crabs of his speices.
Crabbing since 7/4/04 - 10 years!

Would you NEED to? No. Would it be preferable? Oh, yeah. My straws are constantly together, more than other other species I have.

Same here. I got Berry, my first straw, last January. She was just a tiny thing in a painted shell, mixed in with a bunch of ruggies. At the time, the Petco wasn't really carrying straws ... I checked there just about every week, but they just weren't carrying them yet (Berry was a "fluke" I guess!) It wasn't until May that I walked in one day and my jaw dropped open at the fact that they actually had straws! I was kind of hoping for another little one like Berry, but they were all medium - to - large sized. I wasn't going to pass up the chance to get her a straw buddy or two though, and I bought two of them within two weeks. I just hoped that their differences in size wouldn't be a problem. Well, Berry had gone down for a molt before the new crabs were introduced. Very soon after she came up though, I saw her following the bigger straws around almost constantly! And they were just fine with little Berry =) Before I had gotten the new straws, Berry hung out with the E's more than any other crabs (I think they are more alike than the other species). They would follow each other around some, but it was nothing like the the extent that Berry hung around with the new straws once she got to meet them! She seemed so excited - it was really heartwarming to see =)

My friend Koops and I went to Petco yesterday to get some strawberries for him, and he got two. And I can already say, they need a partner in the tank. These guys would always stick together in the tank. Wherever one would go, the other would follow. And I can say all of this after only a few hours of observance.

When Cody went down for her molt Zack looked so lonely. The first day she came up, she went straight to the second level to see Zack. And when she went up to him and they did the old feelers waving thing to say HI, Zack put a leg around her shell and I swear it looked like he was hugging her (okay-so I realize he probably wasn't-but it was cute anyway).

I have had a straw who was alone for about 6 months before she got a species buddy and it did not seem to stress her, but they are much happier as a pair.
