Very new to Crabbin'

Post by Guest » Tue Mar 07, 2006 6:46 pm

I bought my first crabs on Sunday and never thought to ask what kind they are. They are so hard to photograph esp. with 2 kids jumping in front of the camera! :P I have taken a few pics of my crabitat. Just bought the gauges and the temp. is fine but fighting to get the humidity up. One of the crabbies isn't doing so well. Heard it may be destressing. He is half way outta shell but still moves a tad. I stuck him up under a planter incase he needs to be left alone. Hopefully someone can look at the pics and see what kind I have. I have 6. Haven't photo'd all. Can just adding some wet coco fiber stuff help the humidity? I bought some water pillows.Anyone use them but me? Thanks! www.http:photobucket.com/albums/f209/crabbysandy?

Well, I can't see the pics, it says the page is unavailable.

But, what kind of tank and lid do you have? If it is not a solid lid, then wrap it in saran wrap or cover it with a damp towel. Also, wet cocofiber will help a bit, but misting the tank with dechlor water will help faster. Large water dishes with sponges helps too.

your links arent working.....sorry. Yes moist coco fiber can raise humidity--where are your gauges located? Do you have a glass lid? That is essential in keeping the humidity in--if not then you can add a damp towel to cover the screen top - the water pillows are worthless --

WELCOME to the HCA hope things work out for humidity and that poor crabbie

also, it helps a lot to have wet substrate! this will make a big difference if it isn't already moist.

Srry about the link

Post by Guest » Tue Mar 07, 2006 7:27 pm

Srry about the link I will try to fix it. I have a 10 gallon with 2 cocohuts and rocks and sticks and cuttlebones. I have extra shells and a large salt water pool and a fresh water dish. I use all calci sand. I have it about 2 inches deep on one side with heater under glass. I have it at 75 degrees and the humidity is at 40 but slowlyyyyy climbing. I have just a plain plastic hood on top with just a very small opening in the back. I only set things up sunday and just got the gauges this afternoon. I have bathed them once and they all but the one are rather active and love climbing. I also have 2 small flower pots lying on their side dug in the sand for hide outs. I have a sponge in there also. I have seen some eat and some drink. The crabs must have dumped some water on the sand to make it wet cause i didn't do it. Thats about all i guess. I have read this forum for 2 dys and thoughly enjoy all the wonderful ppl here!. Not afraid of asking any "stupid questions". Thanks So much!

When i first started i put my Water dishes over the UTH wil barely 1/4 inch subtrate under them i left em liek that for almost 48 hours then i raised the level of substrate my humidity was over 80 by then it took me a few weeks to find the perfect level of substrate between water dishes and UTH to keep the humidity about 82 permently. And living in minnesota made humidity a horrible thing to try to regulate........but it gets better........I used moist moss too.....thet upped it alot....Live plant work well........i have some palm plants and some bamboo in my tat grows well in moist sand and Eco....

I think they are both Es, but I sometimes have trouble between Es and Ruggies. The little guy in the first close up though I'm pretty sure is an E.

Edit: Welcome to the HCA by the way!
