Caresheet for kids

Post by troppo » Sat Mar 11, 2006 8:53 pm

With there being alot of new members here at the HCA that are very young, and not knowing much about crab-care or being able to understand complicated terms in caresheets,I came up with an idea of creating a kid-friendly caresheet with the help of everyone here that has relevant information to contribute, with the different varieties of crabs.

Would just like to know what everyone thinks about this idea :)

I like your idea. Being at the age of still knowing what type of wording a kid could understand, I would be able to help in this. I think it would be cool if we could get a few other crabbers that are mature kids, that know about a lot crabs, and we can put together a "kid friendly" care sheet.

I also support your idea! It'd be nice to have a kid caresheet with easy to understand terms! I'm still a kid so I know what kids think like lol

I agree, that would be nice for them. Coenobita Compressus probably wouldn't make much sense!

that's great Macandhunter & Minimarcie.

It would be good to know what variety of crabs you have as well so we can do up a caresheet outlining the specific needs of different crabs.
Example,i own Aussies, and I think that they are more tolerant of heat, etc, compared to other varieties.
But having other young people to help is very welcome. Just if you can, please write down what you know about the variety of crab you have, and we can all do up the caresheet together. :)
I'm going to do up a rough draft, and if the poll goes well, then we can put all our ideas together :) .

So your thinking of writing up one specific to Aussie crabs? If so, that sounds good to me. Post it when your done, so we can give ideas to make it kid friendly.

Also, I'm thinking what age group of kids you were exactly thinking these would be aimed toward troppo?

I was thinking of making the care-sheet generalised.
I need to find out info on humidity and temperature levels for different varieties(am looking now),so a 'safe' general level, say for example,a range of 75-85% humidity can be included in the caresheet,& what can be a safe range for temp?etc etc.
Not many people here at the HCA own Aussie crabs,so the sheet will have to pretty much try and cater(if that's possible) for a wide variety of crabs.
Yesterday, was thinking about who is going to write the sheet,(if it is approved to go ahead)
Because there are a few people that are interested in contributing,I had an idea that perhaps the care-sheet can be broken down into topics, such as basic tank set-up,basic crab care, molting, and things that can go wrong with your crab.(if there's anything that has been left out, please let me know). With the topics, everyone here who is interested can choose a topic and write about it,so it'll be something worked on as a team.
Then all the topics will be put together, and checked to make sure the info is accurate, and kid friendly, and then finally approved (mods, directors?)
to make sure it is ok.

Oh,i nearly forgot. Age groups. Hmmm, was thinking about that yesterday as well, and am wondering if anyone here has any ideas as to who the youngest member here at the Hca would be? At a rough guess,I'd say between 12 and 18? Anyone else here have an idea for age-group for care-sheet?

I think we have some 10, or 11 year olds here.. I'd say make it so kids 9-14 could understand it best.

Cool,Macandhunter. Wow,i had no idea there were kids here as young as 10 or 11. I think your age-group idea is brilliant :) .

I would say that the usual age that people might buy a pet for their kids is probably about 7 or 8. You might want to make it understandable for kids that age.

I'm not sure I'm sold.

An information sheet with everything on it, Great! Everything in layman's terms would be beneficial for all.

I'm just worried. I've seen so many pets suffer at the hands of children. *** This said-I'm not talking about anyone here. Being here proves that you do care and are willing to learn and ask questions like us all. I hope I haven't offended anyone.

It's ok Pinky,I'm not offended and i don't think anyone else is :) .
It's good to get feedback of all types, good or bad.
It was hoped that the care-sheet for kids could be available in the caresheets drop down (upper right of page).
With more and more kids visiting the HCA looking for advice, and sometimes being confused with some of the terms used, such as substrate,rh,etc, etc, and possibly being overwhelmed just by the sheer amount of advice here, that's how i came up with the idea of creating a care-sheet with other peoples help, that would be easy to understand and child friendly.
It's always going to be the way where a child or young teen will get hermit crabs as a gift or are bought by other means. And the best way,i feel,to help them is to have both a caresheet available and advice from the crabbers here as well,a two-pronged approach.
