My family and I have had hermit crabs since July of last year. I’ve been looking around at sites today because it seems our smallest crab is molting above the sand (hopefully – we’re a little worried that she might be dead, though that seems like a common worry). We’ve moved the three other crabs out of the regular tank as to not stress her out.

I don’t really have any specific questions, I just thought I’d join because after reading some posts here I feel like I’m really not all that knowledgeable! I’ll probably spend most of my time here reading, but I thought I’d say hello and give some links to photos of my crabs. They’re not very good quality, hopefully we’ll get some better photos of them.

Clawdia (The one who’s hopefully molting):

Godzilla (He’s the largest, and seems a big aggressive towards the other crabs, which worries me a bit):

Lestat:

The first crab we ever got, (before we knew they needed friends!) Oddish:

Anyway, I look forward to being a member here and learning all that I can!

Lestat is (from what I can see) mostly black. However, Lestat is a bit shy most days, so I haven’t really gotten to stare at him for that long. I think next time he’s not being shy I’ll look closer to see if he’s a really dark blue. Normally when he’s not shy he’s REALLY not shy and all over the place, but we don’t have terribly good lighting in the house and it’s always evening…

Godzilla is an E right? If he is that is one of the largest Es I have ever seen.

That's what I mean.... about not being all that knowledgeable! I have no idea what an E means...

Welcome to the HCA! Great pics there. Beauties!

E means the Compressus, or nickname Eduadorean, or E, speices of crab. One give aways are those adorable chubby eyestalks. It seems to me that Oddish is a PP (Purple Pincher, Carabean, tree crab or Clypeatus are it's names). Does he seem to look different to you than your other crabs?

That second picture of Lestat is beautiful!

Thanks everyone!

And yes crabber…. Oddish definitely has the purple pincher claw, the rest do not. I also pointed out to my husband that Oddish’s eyes are a different shape, but he thought I was crazy! Now I have verification, lol

How many species of hermit crabs do you commonly find in stores? Here in Vermont I notice we don’t have much choice, and if I want a crab without a painted shell I get to pick from one store now! It seems PetSmart and PetCo have mostly painted shell crabs (I didn’t even know the painted shells were bad until I read it here, I just hated them)

I don't like the look of the painted shells either.

What species are found depends on what part of the country people live in. Thos lovley Es you have are very hard to find out here. Out here there's mostly PPs, Straws and Ruggies. I've seen indos once or twice, never have seen a Cavie.

It sounds like you are an Anne Rice fan. :)

I know it sounds like I’m an Anne Rice fan, but I’m actually not… strange enough! My husband really likes Interview With A Vampire, though not really anything else. We thought Lestat looked really gothic so we wanted a gothic name… my husband picked that. As for Clawdia we also wanted a gothic name because her shell was so dark.. but then Raymond (my husband) thought it would be just hilarious if it’s name was claw…dia.

Oddish was actually a birthday present for my son, and he named him after a Pokemon. I only named Godzilla. He walks all over everyone and is huge! (Well, huge compared to the others)

Does it look like all of mine (other than Oddish) are E’s? I’ve been looking at photo’s of E’s and ruggies, and honestly I’m having a hard time distinguishing between the two.

Welcome to the board! Your Oddish looks just like my Camo. :D

You asked what kind of crabs can be found in pet stores. I've found PP's, E's, Strawberries, Ruggies, and Indos. (Strawberries are bright red or orange, Ruggies look kind of like E's, and Indos look like PP's with a gigantic big claw.) I've never seen the last legal species, Cavipes, in real life. There are some great pictures in the image gallary that are a big help when identifying your hermit crabs.

I don't have any E's (yet :P ), but Godzilla really looks like an E to me, and the other two seem kinda E-ish. The things to look for on a PP are a purple claw, a different colored last left walking leg (usually orange or red and darker toward the tip), and round eyes. E's have a claw that is the same color as the rest of their body, and the last segment on their walking legs can be darker. They also have very cute, enlongated eyes. I hope this helps a little. Like I said, the image gallery is awesome.

Nice looking crabs! Welcome to HCA! I have one question. In some of the pics, I see a lid from a kritter keeper. Is that the home for your crabs or do you have a tank for them? I was just wondering. Tanks seem to work better for hermit crabs because it helps keep the humidity and temperature high enough for them. Good luck with your crabs...they all look happy and healthy!
