Cavipes at PetCo!

Post by Guest » Wed May 17, 2006 9:03 am

But I didn't get him. He wouldn't pinch my fingernail or come out of his shell. I've already had one death this week--a white Ruggie, who I knew was in bad shape. PPS got her before I even gave her a name. It was my first death, and I was kind of suprized at how attached I'd become in two days... Because of this, I'm a little wary about buying inactive crabs. So what do you guys think? I don't hear much about Cavs, except that they like to hide. I think they're beautiful, so I would love to have this guy, but I'm not sure if this behavior is indicative of illness, or if it's just a normal, quiet Cav thing.

I mostly wanted to say that I finally saw a Cav in real life--not just a picture. :) He seemed pretty, but I could only see his claw. I think I'll go back on Friday. If he's still there and alive, I'll buy him.

i have 2 cavipes, both i got from petco. one i got about 8 months ago, and the other i got about 1 month ago. They are naturally pretty shy. The one i have had for a while is still scared of me and he is out of his shell crawling around, the second he sees my movement, he goes back into his shell and will sit there for 5-10 minutes until he starts to come out again. It is so hard to get pics of them. The recent cavipe is slightly more social, i can get him to come out on my palm, but i have to sit there for a few minutes till he gets the courage and he hides inside his shell too everytime he sees me move.

If you can get him, i would say do it. I have found that these critters are hard to come by, atleast for me. I have had no problems with them yet.

Thank you, Elephantshark! I feel better knowing that they aren't likely to come out when held. I might have to go by on my way home from work tonight.

I have a very small E that is very shy - I hardly get to see him moving about! My son insisted on getting him even though he never came out of his shell at the petstore... He is healthy though, just very very shy.

are you sue it wasn't a full grown E? E's get orange when they become adults...or something about becoming orange in the claw.

If it was, I'd want him anyway. The only species I don't have are E's and Cavs. I would love either one. However, he had a white band across his claw. That's what made me think Cav, and the more I looked at him, the more certain I was. So I'm going to get him in the next couple of days.

Yeay Squishy!! (Hope you don't mind the shortening O' the name)

Congrats on the find! I hope when you go back to get him that he's in great health and feeling friendly!

I still have yet to find a Cav in my area. That would be the only kind I haven't seen in person. Still hunting for another Straw though... Ran accross some Rugs and passed them up for fear of overcrowding.

Congrats again! Can't wait to see pics & hear how it's doing!

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I want him. The only problem is that I'll probably get called into work early tomorrow, rather than having the whole morning to run around town. Maybe tomorrow night... Oh man, I tried to stay calm about him, but now I really want him! They sound so cute and quiet. Everyone, please keep your fingers crossed for me!

And no, I don't mind the "shortening O' the name."

I went this morning, and I couldn't find him. I remember exactly what his claw looked like because it was so unusual, and I couldn't find him. I dug for over half an hour in the nasty EE, and I never found him. However...I did find someone who was orange-y and in the middle of a very, very bad molt... He was basically squished all over, and pieces of his exo were all over the place. I wasn't going to bother him because he was buried so deeply, but when I accidentally moved his shell, he just toppled right out. The employee who was helping me put him back in the shell, but he wasn't well at all. His eyes were down, and he was just barely wiggling. Poor baby...

On a happier note, I did bring home a new hermit crab. This one's my third Ruggie (really my fourth--PPS got the third). It's a funny color--some black, some brown, and some purple with orange joints and a white stripe on the claw. I'll try to get pictures this weekend. I think it's quite a find. It also makes a whole lot of noise at me! It stuck it's face out of it's shell and just "Rrr...rrr...rrr..."

So, I'm sad that I didn't get the Cav and that the mangled molter may have been him, but I got a new friend anyway. I might not eat lunch, though... I can't get the poor little one out of my head.

If I had asked, I probably would have walked out with that molter at no charge. But seeing him the way he was... I don't know. I know if one of my own babies got hurt like that, I would be a good mommy for them, but it scared me to see him so banged up. He literally fell out of his shell in her palm, and for a second I could see his whole body heaving as he tried to breathe. At that point, we were both teary-eyed, and I couldn't watch anymore. I told her to ISO him in a cardboard box with a bunch of EE on the bottom, and I trust that she did. I still had a hard time not thinking about him all day at work. The worst part of the whole thing was that I couldn't find the Cav, and the beat-up molter had an orange exo.

I'm trying to be happy about the crab I brought home. He's very cuddly with the other crabs, so I'm happy with him. He's a funny color--the only way I can describe him is that he's a "Halloween" crab. I think his name will be Pumpkin. He's a chirper.

BTW, I told her to put the cardboard box in the crabitat. That way he would have the same heat and humidity as the others.
