E's at a local petshop, horrible conditions!!
Last night after my boyfriend and I finished our dinner at a local chinese restaurant, we went into a nearby petshop. I didn't expect it to be open since it was after 9 pm, but it was (This was the first time i got to go in because everytime i try to go, it's closed for some wierd reason!) So we are looking around and it's mostly fish and reptiles and so we're about to leave when my bf yells, look over here they have hermit crabs! So i go over to see a tank full of E's! Or what I believe to be E's. They were very blue in color...almost turquoise. This was the first time i saw a species different than a PP. But I will post a pic soon....after i buy some today!
It wasn't a pretty sight though. There was two clearly dead crabs in the tank. I pointed this out to the owner so he picked it up and pulled it out of the shell! What a horrible noise that made. There was no need to do that. Also, there was barely any sand substrate, no heating, no lighting, and to top it off, they were next to the air conditioner!!! I was so upset. I told the guy that they need to have some sort of heater, amongst otherthings, and that they shouldn't be by the air conditioner! I was going to buy a few, but the owner said to come back tomorrow (which is today) and see how they are doing then. I dont know why he said that, but I guess to make me feel better about their conditions when i came back. Which to me meant, if they survive the night, they are good to go.
It was so sad. So I am going back today to get a few. The only thing that makes me uneasy is that he doesn't have a return policy, and at 5$ a crab, that is not a cheap investment to just have one die on me and not be able to have it replaced, especially after the crappy way he kept them in the tank
What do you guys do if there isn't a return policy on the crabs? Do you go ahead and buy anyway, or not buy as many? I can't bare to know they are in that horrible tank.

I think you should give them a chance: he probably had no idea how to take care of hermit crabs, and now that you've pointed it out to him he's going to try and make an effort.

Hi!
Ok so i went back to the store today and i saw that they had added a light, but everything else was the same. the lady did know that the crabs required both salt and fresh water dishes so i will give them some credit for that. and also to use dechlorinator in the water.
i ended up buying two little guys, one of which has been all over the entire tank today, as well as doing a shell change already!! he is definately the most active in the tank. i love it! i will take and post pics tomrrow. its late and i'm exhausted!
