I think Kitty is a good name for a crab (I like it better for a crab than as an obvious name for a cat). Painted shells aren't very good for crabbies, however, so I hope you have some proper-sized natural shells for her to change into. Youre definatly right, hermies are great pets!

there's people here who have so many more!! lol!

Welcome! Kitty is actually such a cute name!
Here's a few things you might wnat for your crabbie:

*a friend (if you don't already)
*humditu gauge (ranges 70-80%)
*temperature gauge (72-80F)
*lots of plants and wood
*sand
*at least a 10 gal tank with lid
*non chlorine water and non chlorine salt water

Here's a good food list: http://www.epicureanhermit.com/index.ph ... 4&Itemid=9

Pianted shells are bad becuase the paint peels and makes a mess and the crab can ea it and that's not very good for them. They also can get stuck in these shells because they often time paint the inside. Here's a sad artical: http://crabstreetjournal.com/articles/l ... iccalo.htm

Hehe, it's funny if you think 5 crabs is a lot. I personally have 25 hermies, and there are members on this forum that have a lot more than that!! Hermit crabs are social animals, in the wild they'll live in groups of 100 or more, so they definitely need friends. If you have a 10 gallon tank (that's really the smallest you should have, anyway, anything smaller is hard to keep in the right conditions), you can have about 4 small-to-medium sized hermies.

I don't name my hermies. I'm bad with names, and they won't come when I call, anyway  . But there are some on this forum that have 50+ hermies, all with names! I don't know how they keep track.

But you should definitely get at least one more crab. Hermies are very social and sometimes will die of loneliness if they don't have a friend.
