Is it better to give a PP a self-serve "bathtub", or a weekly bath? :D

self served it the healthiest, but, if the crab needs a bath, like, for new crabs or molters or somthing, yeah then it's okay.

It's better self-served, because if you put them in yourself, you might stress them out.

Defintely "self-serve"....I dont bath anyone anymore...I just ISO the newbies for a month or so and let them bathe themselves. For the molters I dip their toes in the pond so they acquire the "tank" scent and that usually does it and noone bothers them :)

When you get them you have to give them a quick bath because God only knows what they've got on them. After that I make sure that both my salt and fresh water dishes are big enough for a good bath should they decide that they want them. I figure this way they can regulate their own salinity levels. However, when I get a bunch of new ones at the same time, I'll take all of the top side ones out and give them a quick dip in 1/2 strength salt water to let them smell the same to cut down on fighting.

I used to bathe once a week, but stopped because I did a similar poll and most people just let their crabs "self-serve." I do thoroughly bathe all new crabs before I put them in the main tank. Crabs fresh from the pet store can be pretty nastied up sometimes.

I do self-serve because it allows the crabs to decide when they need to bathe and doesn't cause as much stress to them as it would be to take them out of the tank and plop them in water. The only time I do bathe them is if I have a molter re-entering the tank from ISO or if I am introducing a new crab.

I also used to bathe but since I have quit I have noticed a healthy change in my crabs. I only bathe when I bring home a new crab. Even when they get mites I dont bathe I spray them with double strength salt water. If the crab wants a bath they'll give it to themselves.

bathtime

Post by Guest » Wed Jun 28, 2006 11:50 am

I do give occassional baths now, since it gives me a chance to look everyone over for health reasons. it is also fun to let them free-range on the carpet to dry off. bathtime makes everyone go active.
