RedRug, RedRug!!!!

Post by Guest » Tue Jun 27, 2006 8:32 pm

Ok, Ok, no need to quote The Shining, I know, but I couldn't resist. So today I am on the other side of town, and since my petco finally had ruggies in again, I decided to check them, and indeed, they did. I saw these two.....

Image
BP, looks like a basic black ruggie, right??

Image
SURPRISE!!! Cadmium is a lovely RED!!

So then, intrigued, I begin to look at all the other ruggies who just look like basic black ruggies.....

Image
Looks normal again, maybe a bit purple-ish.....

TA-DA!! Carmine is ALSO a lovely red ruggie!!!

I am a bit concerned about the white crusty stuff on the side of Carmine's eyestalks.....

But are they not the lovelies???? I have never seen a RED ruggie before, and would you believe that THOSE are their BP's???? In color they almost look like PP's, but then you look at that black BP, and you know they aren't. They're PURTY!!!!

I am in the market for a couple of ruggies, and my Petsmart has them, but now I want to hold out for colorful ones like yours!

Sadly, I found that Carmine has MITES!!!!!!! I looked in and saw her atop the big barnacle, naked, and freaked out. I found her old shell next to the water dish, crawling with MITES!!!! I took it and threw it away, and washed her, and put her in ISO with a choice of shells, and she immediately changed into one, so I hope the mites were the only problem. Now I just need to find the place that sells the predatory mites, and release them into the crabitat. I didn't see any craling around on any of the crabs, but then, I didn't see any crawling around on the crabs at Petco either, so I'm going to be safe and get the predators. Luckily, she has stayed in the new shell, so hopefully she'll be ok!

Poor little thing. You handled it like a pro though. I'm sure she'll be fine.

yup, same as I do all the newbies. She got an initial saltwater bath, mixed a bit stronger than regular seawater, and then a fresh rinse in some freshwater from the 'tat, so she'd smell the same

did u leave her in 5 min? NO way you would not have seen something in the water.......do you use the flashlight trick? Lesson learned? ISO newbies :?:
I hope everything turns out ok, I see no purpose on this earth for pesky bugs.....Im having a chat with "someone" on that someday

Yup, I did five minutes, and I saw nothing!! And the whole tank got set up this weekend, with new, baked playsand, all the decorations and such were either baked or boiled, so I know they weren't there this weekend. And I checked everybody else, no mites. The only place I found anything was in her old shell........ So I dunno.... I didn't see any mites in the water when she got her newbie bath, and I probably should have ISO'ed the newbies to begin with, but, to be honest, I'm thinking I'm going to have to put Lampi in there, so I wanted to keep it clear. He's my big guy, and he keeps digging like he's going to molt, and then anyone gets near his spot and he pops back up, so I'm thinking I'm going to ISO him, so he can be left alone to do his business, and I wanted to leave clear the ISO for that reason......

little white bugs....... there were like5 or 6 of them, but they're so tiny, I dunno. They were maybe 1 1/2 times bigger than the sand grains, but still quite tiny. I am very much less than thrilled, since I have never had mites before, and I don't want any more deaths! I lost Goldie yesterday, and that just tore me up. When I did the changeover, I sifted and sifted through the substrate, but I couldn't find her! I searched, used a flour sifter with ALL the dirt, checked all the decorations and such, and no Goldie. I was very upset, since she is a wonderful sweet little E. I thought, since she had been dug under, that perhaps she never made it back up, and had decomposed in the EE Then last night I went to take a load of towels out of the dryer (the toilet backed up all over the living room after dinner, and I had to use a lot of towels to help dry the carpet fast, and it's STILL going to have to be ripped up, because the water seeped into the boards), and she fell out, cooked. I feel like the worst crabbie parent on earth, somehow she got out, and I didn't know it, and I put her in the laundry, and killed her. And now I have mites!! Plus, I looked, and the predatory mites are PRICEY!! I know it sounds awful to complain, since they are fabulous for the mites, but with shipping, it's like over $60!!! *sigh* crabbing is a pricey hobby :)
