New crab -Freshly molted!

Post by Guest » Thu Jun 29, 2006 2:01 pm

I just brought home a new PP. She was pretty shy at petco and did not come out, but I was intrigued by her BP, which was a pretty amethyst color. I began to bathe them and she finally came out. She has obviously just molted because she is salmon pink all over! I'm new to crabbies and need all the advice I can get. I put her in ISO with two new buddies. What else should I know or provide to make her comfy? Thanks for the advice in advance!!

Did you see any exoskeleton next to the crab (skin they just shedded)? If not and if you can't go and get it put some honey in ISO so they can get energy. Congrats on the new crab! :P

There was no exo that I saw, but the petco girl had grabbed all the crabs and moved them toward the opening of the crabitat. I've put some honey next to her. She hasn't really moved since I put her in the tat. ( Is that normal?) I'm trying to just leave her alone and not stress her out! Thanks for the advice!!

She may just naturally be pink, do you have a pic? Otherwise like they said, just isolate the crab and maybe buy some cuttlebone from the bird section in the pet store and crush it up for the little guy. Keep the temp and humidity up as well.

I have a PP, Lila, who is naturally a salmon/peachy color all over, except for her bp, which is lilac. check her for the little "fingernails" on the ends of each legs-if each one is intact, that makes it more likely that she has molted recently.

If she is recently molted, she might need a little something to help her firm up, especially as her exo was probably mistaken for a dead crab and thrown in the trash. if you can, I would get a shrimp and grind its tail up, then place it near her. the honey you mentioned will be good to give her energy.

i hope to see pictures!

Crushed egg shells in honey are good for hardening up the exo of a newly molted crab too.

Thanks for all of the advice! I need all the help I can get. She hasn't come out yet, but I will have the camera handy when she does! Hopefully my husband can help me figure out how to get the picture on here!

Congrats on your new baby!!!

As HH999 said, color isn't always indicitive of a fresh molt. But stick to the side of caution just in case.

It is possible she is dealing with stress. I would provide the optimal care and honey and leave her be while she gets used to her new environment.

Sorry, i wrote more, but my darling feline just somehow deleted everything! Grrr...She IM's too.

What you do to get the pic on here is to upload it to www.photobucket.com and then once its uploaded and you have the pic on screen after you click on it, copy the link and then click the button that says "Img" then paste the link after the letters that come up and then press the "Img" button again and then the pic will be on here after you click on submit.
