New Hermie Owner

Post by Guest » Sun Jul 02, 2006 2:54 am

Hi everyone! I just found this site while trying to read up on hermit crab care in books and online so I can be a great owner and keep my hermies well. I just bought two new hermit crabs for my first time on June 29. One is named Rufus and the other Pinchy. :P They are both medium sized purple pinchers. Pinchy is pretty active at night but Rufus is pretty quiet in his own corner most of the time. Is that okay? I'm hoping that he can adjust to his new home and his little roomate. If anyone has any advice on ANYTHING relating to new hermit owners, please reply. I really want to keep my new babies safe and sound. Thank you!

When I first started caring for hermies, I too read up on info, but I made the mistake of taking the one book I read as gospel. this book said that hermies didn't need gauges, PPs didnt need salt water, and various other wrong pieces of info. so I would, as HomieHermie99 said, to visit www.hermit-crabs.com because the info there is up to date and absolutely correct.

welcome to the HCA! we'd love to see pictures of Rufus and Pinchy! and it is perfectly normal for one to be less active than the other-hermies, just like humans, have different personalities and can exhibit different behaviors.

Welcome to the HCA!!! :D

It is so great to have new members that are so dedicated to LHCs!!!

HH999 & annopia give great advice when suggesting lots of reading. That site saved my babies 3 years ago and my first 7 are still with me today!

You will find contradicting advice at times in your readings. Just pose the questions here and you will most likely get the most current ideas. Crab keeping isn't necessarily new. Good information is.

Christa, the HCA's founder and former president, is one of the pioneers in crabbing. Because of her passion for good crabbing and other's like her the information is growning and therefore evolving. In the 3 years I have been reading books, online info and crabbing, the information has changed and changed again. And some of it, we don't all agreen on. :D

There are templates to fill out about how you keep your crabs. If you would like to fill one out, that would help with getting feedback on how you are doing.

Again, Welcome!!!
Watch out, these little buggers are addictive!

Thanks for the advice and I am reading a lot of info. on different sites and listening to what other owners are writing about. Rufus actually went to play in the freshwater dish today then went back to sleep. I'll probably take pictures of them when they're not scared to peek out of their shell at me. Thanks! :P
