Bad store, more rescues! (Again…. )

Last night we stopped at a pet store (you know the story….)

It was very hot, as it has been for a lot of people on this site it seems. We were at the store that we bought Goomba in. (Goomba is our crab that recently molted and lost basically all color) When we bought Goomba the tank was in the back so I never saw the conditions. Yesterday, I did.

The tank (5 gallons maybe? It was an odd size, the size isn’t really my concern) had no lid, and the fan that was cooling off the room was blowing directly into it. There were 2 dishes, both of which were completely empty. They had no food or water. There were at least 3 dead crabs, all out of their shell. They had really small dyed green pebbles for substrate, it was not deep enough to even cover the entire bottom of the tank.

My husband complained, they filled up both dishes with some water and misted the tank.

I noticed while noticing the horrible conditions that there was a large PP in there. This large PP was a large PP that was there when I got Goomba! (When I bought Goomba they just brought out the 3 largest crabs they had, rather than let me see the tank) It meant to me that he had been living this way for at least a couple of months, if not longer. I couldn’t bear to let him remain there. With everyone in a molting tank done, I had room (not to mention extra empty tanks still – sooo dangerous!)

We named him Fred Astaire:

While looking at the other guys I noticed this gorgeous one with a black stripe on his claw! I believe he is a ruggie, but please confirm my ID. He’s just far too lovely to not buy! We named him Jin:

They’re in iso together, and totally loving the FOOD, WATER, and SAND I provide!

yep, Jin is definatly a ruggie, he has huge stich marks under his eyes! he's such a cutie.

i bet fred is glad that you rescued him, big PPs are my favorite of all crabs. those conditions were so horrible that its amazing that he is in such a natural, beautiful shell. did he have that on when you got him?

Thanks everyone! They're doing great. Now if I could have only saved them all!

annopia, he did come in that shell! None of the crabs at that store had painted shells. They did have some of those shells that look dyed though? I'm not sure if anyone knows what I'm talking about because I'm not sure if they're really dyed. They're colorful, but clearly not with paint.
