Hi my name is Sharon. Me and my family are new crab owners. We have four. I am not really sure what species they are. I think we have a couple different ones.

if you post pics of your crabbies, im sure someone could identify them for you. some crab care depends on the species of your crab. (e.x. straws need saltwater and PPs don't) i guess to sum it up, if you are able post pics and. . . WELCOME TO THE HCA!!!!

Wait, the care guide says PPs need salt water too. Is that right or wrong?

probably right, but i don't think it is vital for PPs

they sure do, every species does. but with straws its vital that their salt water dish is big enough to soak in. my PPs actually prefer to drink the salt water than the fresh dechlor

I haven't had a chance to take photos yet, but by the end of the weekend I should have them. I have been looking on some sites and I think that I have 1 E and three PP's but I am not sure. If I do have a couple different kinds can someone please explain in simple terms what I need to do to give them salt water and all that. Thanks

you need to purchase a marine salt from the pet store, and, following the directions on the bottle/box, mix it with dechlorinated water. then put some in a bowl in your tank, along with a bowl of plain dechlorinated water.

The easiest way to get dechlorinated water is to buy dechlorinator drops (sometimes called water conditioner) from the aquarium section of the petstore/ Walmart. Just make sure it doesn't say "enhances the slime coat of fish" or something similar.

I've had my hermies (Hermes, Mimi and Birkin) for only about a week, so I'm REALLY new too.

I have learned so much from this site already and everyone seems really nice and very helpful. Even if they don't know how to answer your question, a lot of people will still post just to let you know you're not alone.

Welcome to the HCA family [smilie=grouphug.gif] Ask as many questions you need to ask to get yourself established. General care is in the pull down menus to the right. Important to know for starters is...use play sand instead of calci sand. You need a temp gauge and hydrometer, salt water and fresh water dishes, and fresh food is better than commercial food. NarNar here on the HCA sells good stuff which is safe and otherwide check out the Epicurean crab for a list of safe foods. When your crabs dig down leave them alone. Happy crabbing
