I am not sure if this is part of "Food/Water" or if it should belong somewhere else, but since it is often referred to being given to a hermit crab for "nutritional" value.........
Is there a commercial product for crushed cuttlebone, or is it something that you buy and then throw in a blender (I'd think it would break the blender!)

You could always buy a cuttlebone and then crush it. My favorite method is to put it in a Ziploc bag and wrap it in a towel. Afterwards, hit it with a hammer and it will powder.

i got my cuttlebone from
http://www.thecrabbagepatch.com/. I put a block of cuttlebone in a plastic bag and hit it with a wooden spoon. Then you can sprinkle it on their food, or sprinkle it on honey =]

Cuttlebone is actually pretty soft (you can scrape it with your fingernail), so it won't break the blender. I don't crush it up, though. I just put whole cuttlebones in the crabitat, and the hermies scrape off what they need.

Come to think of it.... I do remember something about how "soft" the bone actually is... I used to own a bird and had cuttlebone....
Crushed or whole, it wouldn't need to be replaced like normal food and water, right?

I only put small chunks in my crabitat, about the size of my pinky nail...They demolish it pretty easily, so I would assume they don't have trouble eating it..
Maybe scratch some off every so often onto their food...
I don't think I've ever had a problem with it being left in the tat..
Although once it fell into the water... But hey, who doesn't love calcified water?!

If you don't want to break your own you can get already powdered cuttlebone from the Addiction Store.

I was going to post something about that the other day during my internet organic shopping spree, when the site was moved without warning and I couldn't get in
I didn't order any. I saw these "flavored" cuttlebone for 99 cents and got grape flavored. I hope it's okay. I haven't actually used it yet though.
