time for a small/med crab

Post by GRMU99 » Mon May 21, 2012 9:45 am

I know this was probably asked before but, I can't find the post. Anyway I have 3 small/med crabs that are probably molting. They had been down almost week. So, right now I have no life in the tank. I was wondering how long does a small/med crab to molt? I did had 4 crabs but, one didn't make it through its molt and was about 2 weeks ago. It did seem that they went down around the same time. I just hope they don't die and they come up soon. Next month I'm going to Ocean City Nj for a week and I always bring home a few crabs from there.

I've had anywhere from a couple weeks to 2 months for a small. A medium could take even longer. Sometimes they dig around underground for a while to find just the right place. Then sometimes they just stay and rest a long time after they are done.

It will also depend on other factors - a molt with a limb regrowth seems to take longer than a straight-up "here's my new skin" molt. I have one down right now that is regrowing his BP and it seems like it's taking forever!

30 to 60 days was always about average for mine, but they can go shorter or longer!
