A lot of people keep the screen lids (covered to hold humidity) bc they like to let their crabs climb up on the lid. Hermit crabs can get just about anywhere they want to, I’ve seen mine in places I have no idea how they got there. I go a little overboard, I use strapping tape on each corner of my lids and keep gallon jugs of water on top also. It doesn’t look the best but no one is going to get out! Lol!
I did think about the bridge being too close to the top when I first put it in there. So I decided to take it out and put it aside for now. It took up too much room too. I'll be moving in a couple of months and upgrading my 20 gal long to a 55 gal that I have stored in my Dad's basement. I'm going to use the bridge in that tank instead. In the meantime, I used the small crabby climber I made and attached it to a plastic riser I bought from Amazon. I also attached 2 pieces of Cholla wood on the sides to make a railing to keep extra shells from falling off. I originally had a screen top lid with plastic bags and saran wrap around it. But it got to be a pain to move every time I had to change water/food. So I bought a glass top with a hinge to get in and out easier. It keeps the humidity in better too. I totally don't blame you weighing down the lid. I even have my glass top taped down around the back..I should probably put something on the lid area too to make it heavier and harder to open.
