How do you clean/prep egg crate before it goes in the tank?

A simple wash under running water to remove dust and residue should be fine, if you want, you can use a bristled brush to really dislodge crud off it.

I know this post is a month old, but just wanted to add something. When clipping the egg crate into the size I need, some of the edges left are sharp. I take a rough nail file or sand paper, and file the sharp edges down.
