Searching for reliable gauges

Post by Gorthaur » Sun Jun 11, 2006 5:16 pm

I have six sets of gauges right now and none of them really work:
2 sets of Fluker's digital gauges - one set completely stopped working, and the other only reads temperature
1 Wal-Mart therm./hyg. combo that stopped working after two days
1 set of Kritterz gauges that are stuck
1 set of Exo-Terra gauges that get condensation inside and get stuck
1 set of Zoo-Med gauges that also seem to be stuck.

Any recommendations? I've been moving the working gauges between my 20 and 50 gallon tanks to make sure everything's staying stable (and it is), but I'd really like some good, relatively inexpensive digital gauges.

I've never had a problem with the $6.47 Wal-Mart digital gauges. Maybe you just picked up a bad one?

I agree with Willow. I have 2 of those guages from wal-mart and never had a problem with and they still have the same batteries I bought them with lol.

Ok well the Flukers digital gauges are nothing but garbage. I had one and from the beginning only the thermometer worked and then that died as well, so I changed the battery thinking maybe that is the problem, but nope, the thing is still dead. Luckily I had ordered another digital gauge at the same time and that one works wonderfully. I am not sure who makes it but its green and says TOM on the front of it. Unfortunately I have been able to find a digital temp/humidity gauge at the walmart that is across the street from me.

I have 2 digitals:
One of the wal mart one and it seems to work well for the price, however it's a little slower than the fluker's one but it still works very well and changes within a minute of the conditions changing.

my fluker's one is the one I love. I know people have had bad experiences and all I can say is that they must have gotten a bad one, and should have tried to return it if a battery change didn't work.
I've had mine for just less than a year, never changed the battery and when the conditions change, it seems to instantly adjust. The only thing I'd change is a better way to stick it onto the glass. mine is starting to slide down because it got so moist, but i also moved it once.
There's my experience hope that helps. Once you got digital- you won't want to go back to analog! It's great.

This might be a good thread to post this question...

Does anyone know of a digital temp/humidity gauge that reads by probe? The ones I have found can read temp by probe, but not humidity. Has anybody seen such a thing?

CQ, I have never seen them either but would really want one... the gauges take up so much of the glass and it would look better with just a few probes sticking in.

I've had my Walmart digital temp/humdity for several years and so far no problem except it takes up a lot of space on the thank wall. My analog is off by 5.

My Fluker's digital thermo/hygrometer worked fine right up until it got pulled off the aquarium wall (sticky pads and all) by one of my strawberries and then fell into a water dish due to the weakened glue. It is quite dead now.

Thanks guys. I think I'll try another Wal-Mart gauge or two.

Good question about the probe ones. Those would be nice because you don't have to worry about attachment inside with the humidity. I will see if I can find one.
