1) Moss question, and 2) Tank terrace recommendation?

Post by Guest » Sat Jul 08, 2006 8:11 pm

I really want to get some moss for my 10 gal, but don't want to pay pet store prices. Do y'all think I can get it at a craft store, like Michaels, or even a dollar store or Walmart?

AND

Has anyone used the Tank Terrace shelf kit from Penn Plax? I'm thinking about using it for a 2nd level in my 10 gal.

Thoughts anyone?

Yes you can use craft store moss, alot of people here use it. However make sure if the package says spanish moss you do not use it. From what i understand that is bad for them. As for the tank terrace I have not used it but it sure looks like something I would like to use lol.

I buy moss at Wal-Mart. It's in the section with the fake flowers. I think it's called "floral moss" and it's in a green bag. About $1.88, if I remember correctly.

I’d compare the price of the terrace with a shower caddy. Our crabs like our shower caddy full of moss, shells, and a coconut hut.

Ok thanks! I actually went to WalMart the other day and bought a nice artificial plant which I'm happy about, for 86 cents, which makes me even more happy about it. Yay!

It's nothing amazing actually, but I think I'm very particular when it comes to artificial plants. Anyway, I like it. As soon as I switch my substrate from EE to playsand I'll get some pictures of my setup!

The moss I found at Michaels even said for terrarium use on it, but I was still a little worried that they might just mean plant terrariums rather than those with pets.since it didn't say anything about being animal-friendly. Well, if y'all think it's ok. I was about to buy some Fluker's terrarium moss from Petsmart just to be on the (very) safe side, but if you guys are being successful with craft moss I don't see any reason to pay more. Thanks for the tip about Spanish moss, Lzzbtt! I wouldn't have known.

I use craft moss too... I soak it in salt water and microwave for one minute to hydrate it and kill any eggs or bugs that might be in it (it's a small chance but I'm not taking it). . Just make sure it is not painted and I heard the same about not using Spanish Moss.
