Fish net & Sea Sponge from Craft Store???

Post by Guest » Sat Mar 11, 2006 12:10 pm

I have been hesitant about buying these items until I get more advice. Maybe you all can help.

In the shell section of most craft stores, I've seen bagged fish net being sold. Also, in the paint section or shell section, I've seen sea sponges being sold.

Are these untreated that you know of? There is no place on packaging that states this. If no smell to items, would you think they would be safe to buy and sterilize the usually way at home?

Thank you!

on my packages of sponges it says "professional artist natural ocean sponge" from Royal an art supplier. I found them in the paint section of Micheal's and I'm pretty sure they are safe.

I've had no problems with the sea sponge. I poured boiling water over it (it shrunk) and the I soaked it it dechlor water (went back to full size again). The crabs having been crawling all over it.

Are these the same sponges as the pet supply has? I noticed the craft sponges I bought while natural were a different color. The holes were also larger. I stopped using them because I could not get the stink out. I was not sure they needed them to eat them to meet some nutritional requirement.

Mine were diffrent too, but they didn't have a stick in them...

Well, I think it is a diffrent specieas of sponge or somthing. Yes, they get some urtiance from sponges, although I don't know what, I have never asked sombody about the nutritaional value of a sponge.

I bought a big bag of sponges for about 4 bucks. I use them to help disperse humidity into the crabitat.

The alternative was the quarter-sized sponge from Petsmart for about $3.50.

The bag I purchased said "all natural sea sponge" so I gave them a go (after the dechlorinated bath and such). The crabs seem to be fine with them.
