Cover for screen top

Post by Guest » Wed Apr 18, 2007 1:17 pm

I wish the forum were more easy to search because I'm sure someone has asked before (actually I wish I had more time to go through all the posts) I have a Kritter Keeper brand tank right now with the sliding screen top. It's been nothing but fabulous as far as giving the space I need for the crabbies and the accessibility I need for myself, but it's obviously awful keeping in humidity. I have two small pieces of plexiglass on there but there is a 1" gap so that's not cutting it. Aluminum foil didn't do so hot either. Has anyone ever made their own insert? What from? I'm having trouble finding things that won't melt/catch fire under the heat lamp, but will keep the humidity in. I'm tired of spritzing 5 times a day. I figured I'd ask here because it's probably an easy fix to make and I'm just not getting it.

it's worth the upgrade to a glass aquarium, even if you are only going to a 10 gallon. I was amazed at how much easier it was to keep my temp/humidity levels stable. Just a warning though, you'll grow out of the 10 gallon pretty quick

I think you guys are thinking the plastic ones. It's a 15 gallon glass tank. I just need something to cover the mesh lid

You could get a glass lid, or just a plain hood lamp lid. They hold in humidity and temp a lot better!

unfortunately I can't. it's not a sit on top lid, it slides in. if I swap it nothing would lock in right. I need something to fit in the frame over the mesh. I thoguht plexiglass would do the trick, but I can't find anything in the right size or anywhere willing to cut it to size for me

Oh! I know what you are talking about! I have a tank like that for my gecko.
Yeah plexiglass would probably work, have you done some googleing for that? If not you might be able to fing someone locally who will do it for you.

how thick is the screen slidey guy? I use plastic poster board to fill in the gaps in my aquarium hoods, I found it as Home Depot it's really cheap, right next to the plexi and easily cutable. I love it, it's plastic so it wipes clean and it's cheap so if I make a mistake I can redo it and it holds up to the heat well.

the frame is probably about 1/4" ish. my biggest problem would be it actually runs on a track and then locks down and I really like that security and would hate to lose it. I'm also able to keep a light hood on it so I don't have to swap my day and night bulbs. I have thought of a plastic liner material like you can put under rugs in case of spills, but I get this bad feeling it would melt and my luck the fumes would kill something

Sorry, I didn't realize it is a tank
The only thing else I could think of ( and someone here has already suggested it) was to check at the home inprovement stores like Lowes, Home Depot, or Ace hardware (?) Someone up there has to cut glass and plexi-glass to your measurements. I had my pcs cut at Lowes. Fits my 30 gallon tank, for $13.00. Good luck, I wish I could be of more help.

don't be sorry. I thought it about it after two of you mentioned theplastic ones and was like oh yeah those are called the same thing! I'm going to have to check out Lowes. we just got one of them aroun here. our Home Depot is awful. the most unhelpful lot of employees I've ever met. I went with my mom to get a new toilet for her upstairs bathroom and no one offered to help us get it down off the shelf or anything!
