WARNING! All living things half or full pine log!
I own this product and i DO NOT reccomend it to crab owners. It is a great climbing tool but it molds like nuts even after spraying/soaking it in salt water! It also attracts bugs! I had to throw mine out and i hope no one else has to waste thier money!

Mold is a touchy thing. You could have two of the same things, and have one mold and one doesn't. By the sounds out it, you've got mold spores actually in your tank and they just used the wood to latch onto.
How long did you soak it for?

With woods it's best to let it dry completely before adding it to the tank. In the moist environment of the hermit crab tank the wood will never dry out, which is why you get molt growing.

Deep clean is the only sure fire way to get rid of mold spores.
I have 2 all living things half-log hideouts myself and never had a mold problem.
On a semi-related note, I seem to be one of the few who does not boil/bake/soak in salt water all of the things that I put in the tank. I figure that these little guys survived in the wild eating feces and being exposed to all sorts of things, so a little dust won't hurt. I do, however, check how all porous products were treated before I put them in. If it is questionable, I don't buy it.

6 PPs (6/12/11): Pinchy/Calypso (♀), Filo (♀), Clack (♂), Statler (♂), Petrie (♂), and Waldorf (♂).
Pinchy and Calypso turned out to be the same crab, pre-molt/post-molt.
