So I found this pin on pinterest of an easy diy for the hermits which lead me to this tutorial from the crab street journal (
http://crabstreetjournal.org/blog/2012/10/16/332/). Basically all you need is a fake vine and a fake plant of your choice and I already had the materials lying around so I decided to try it out. I think it turned out pretty well:
As you can see, my version is a bit different from the one in the tutorial. I wanted a nice climbing area for them so I made more "roots", twisting together two vines instead of one. I wanted lots of leafy coverage to maximize hiding areas so Instead of pulling all the leaves off the plant I just cut it into separate strands and placed them all near the front (since I knew I'd be putting it in the back corner of the tank). In order to make sure it was sturdy I threaded the stems through a loop at the top of the vine and secured it with a zip tie. I made sure there was plenty of room for the hermies to hang out near the "trunk" of the tree, where it connects to the roots.
Has anyone else tried this diy, or something similar?

LOVE IT! Been thinking about making a mangrove tree for the tank also-there's a couple of ways to do it. Yours turned out much better than the tutorial, I think.

Thank you landlubber

. I hope you post pictures if you do make one, I'd love to see how yours would look.

There used to be a thread here on it too but I'm not seeing it...
Looks really good. Let us know how your crabs like it!

What a great and easy idea! I'm due for a trip to Goodwill to drop off several boxes of "stuff" so I'll go in to see if there are any usable plants before heading to PetSmart for the twisty vines (cheap is always better

). Thanks for the post!

What kinds of vines are safe to use? I've had a few before that were, like, stainless steel wires wrapped with this foamy material. I figure that's not safe for hermit crabs.
Should the fake vines being used be for this lovely little tree be plastic-y, or can I use something like bio-vine?

The crabs got the supplies to make one of these as part of their Christmas present. Just made it tonight! I'm not entirely happy with it (not as many leaves as I'd like, and I don't like the ones I used ), but it'll work! I hope the crabs like it more than I do.
I added the flowers for more cover, and found out via google that American mangroves have flowers like these, so I was pretty pleased with that! Going to be cleaning and redecorating the tank tomorrow, so will see if it fits then.

Nicely done, fantasybookworm! Neither PetSmart nor Petco had the vines in stock when I went looking last month so I ended up with a resin version (on sale!) to which I added a vine and a large yellow flower. Only my smallest crab has been on it as he was the first up from the group molt just before Christmas. The wide area between the legs I'm using for their leaf and food dishes.

I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm not sure if you're going to be getting a reply, this thread is shy of being a year old.
