I finished mine. It turned out good but a little lop sided lol. Not sure where I'm going to put but I'll post some pics when I do. Thanks for the great idea. I've been trying to find a net for a while but they were too expensive for me. This cheap easy and fun to do. Good ideas rockygurly!!!

Thanks guys, I'm really glad your crabs are liking them! I would absolutely love it if anyone wanted to share pictures
Just thought I'd throw this out there: Since these are yours they are totally customizable, during the winter break I'm going to break out the hemp and mess around with shapes and bead (glass ones and beads made out of shells) to see what works, as well as messing around with different ways to hang them and spiderweb patterns and such. I'll put it all on here and update it
But also, you can make the weave really tight if you have small crabs and you're worried about them falling, or you can make it wider if you want it to have more of a "net" kind of look.

I really want to make some crochet ones but I seem to be having trouble finding hemp. Is there any other type of string/yarn that is safe for the crabs? Like cotton, but I suppose it needs to be natural non-dyed which might be even harder to find then the hemp lol

Wal mart sells big balls of hemp in the craft section
Or at least it should, if not I'm
sure Micheals has some.. but I think everything is upside down and backwards in the states

It's not the prettiest thing, but I'm happy with the results! Came out much better than I thought. I'm not even sure if I did it "right", but I winged it and it worked lol. And I have you to credit with the inspiration!

Oh three posts, I feel spammish...but I have a question! Was your hemp stiff when you bought it, and was it softer when you boiled it...? I didn't boil mine beforehand, as I thought it would be a failing trial run. So I plan on boiling it regardless, I'm just curious

I'm glad you found it
Those nets look awesome guys, it's your net, so if you made it, you made it "right"
you know?
I found my net was very stiff before I boiled it
But it was also very stinky! I boiled it in sw and then soaked it overnight to get rid of the extra tannins, it was nice and soft after that
But after sitting in my tank for a few months my old one got filled with dirt and salt and it got all stiff again so I'm giving it a soak sometime soon when I get around to it

This is perfect for me. I will try it as soon as I can get my hands on the hemp.
