What are you using to heat your tat? It looks like they have lots of climbing room, what did you use other than the great stuff foam?

Yes, this is what they'll be staying in! I'll be emailing you shortly so that we can discuss the adoption details!Bonnie wrote:..... this is what my babies will be staying in!? Oh my gosh I am super glad that you're taking them. <3
lol they would definitely love the space! You're welcome to bring them for a visit haha!lia013 wrote:I wish my 4 purple pinchers had that much space lol. Actually I wish had that tank and as many crabs as I could fit in there.
Totally worth it! Thank you so much! The plant is quite big, about 4ft I believe...the 'tat is quite big too! lolaussieJJDude wrote:WOW, the mess is worth it!
That thing - that you call a tank and we call a zoo - looks awesome! The crab will love it!!!
Also, that big plant you got i have that in my room, it really shows how big it is!
Thank you! Updated pics coming soon!mom23 wrote:Love the progress. Can't wait to see more! It's amazing.
Thank you so much! I will definitely be doing a video tour once all of the crabs are settled in! The majority of them dug down I'm assuming to distress, I'd be quite stressed if I spent three days in a tote with a bunch of other crabs.crab_circus wrote:This is the most ambitious tat I've ever seen in my life, I really enjoy the process photos and I can't wait to see the finishing results. I hope when you do have the time, you'd make a video of it (like a tour haha ) <3
I used acrylic paints to paint, and silicone to seal it.EdisNiksic wrote:What what did you use to paint the foam?
I'm using a combination of two 75w night bulbs and a beanfarm UTH. They've got plenty of climbing room, as far as the background goes it's just great stuff foam that's been painted and sealed.happycrabbymama wrote:What are you using to heat your tat? With all that height are u having trouble with keeping it cool enough up top and warm enough on the bottom? And how would u use an uth on that? I wanna make a tank out of plywood and have the great stuff background. I wasn't sure if the the heat of the uth would penetrate. How about those heat cord things herp keepers use, is it any good and how would u use it?

I'll get some action shots of the crabs once they come up, I was expecting them to explore once they were put in the tat, but everyone hid and dug down. But I'd be pretty stressed and exhausted too from being in a tote for three days
I'm not having any issues with it yet, but I just set it up. I did have to move the lamps closer to substrate level as it was only getting up to 73F. Everything seems okay now, 80F at substrate level and close to 97F towards the top. Humidity is what I'm struggling with, need to get my fogger setup so I can get it above 70%.EdisNiksic wrote:With all that height are u having trouble with keeping it cool enough up top and warm enough on the bottom? I do use a UTH but it's on the glass top (though I temporarily moved it to the front glass doors to see what option I like better) I don't think a UTH would be able to get heat through the wood, it'd have to be placed inside but I'm not sure how that would work, especially with the background. I've used the UTH on the lid since the old 217gl 'tat, I just like it to feel more "realistic" with the heat coming down from the suns warmth...but maybe I'm just putting too much thought into it
I'm not familiar with the heat tape because I've never used it. There was a crabber (who is no longer active on HCA) who made a built in 'tat in a wall at her house and I believe she used heat tape. I'll try to find the thread and post the link for you to see it. I wish my tat looked as good as hers!
EDIT: Here's the link!!!
Thank you! More pics and a video tour coming soon!CallaLily wrote:Looks awesome!!

Re: 1,020gl Crabitat-*Completed!*
Thank you! I too wish that she would update, it'd be great to know how everything is doing and how the crabs have enjoyed it.mom23 wrote:Can't wait to see more! I have read that thread before, wish she'd update. I love her set up too.
Thanks! It is definitely a dream tank, the crabs spent about a week (what I'm assuming was) destressing. They spent the last week buried and have just recently started resurfacing and exploring! It's been quite a treat sitting in front of the tank for hours just watching them explore.Skymall007 wrote:I love it! Congrats! It is fantastic, I can't wait to see the hermies in it. Thank you!NinjaPurgs wrote:Awesome!
So after getting them all moved in and doing numbers, files and headshots of each crab with current shell, size, and sex. I ended up with 95 crabs total. 47 Large/Jumbo PP's, 28 Medium PP's, 6 Small PP's, 2 Large E's, 5 Medium E's, 2 Medium Ruggies, 4 Small Ruggies, and 1 Large Indo. Unfortunately I lost 6 crabs that I know of for sure, 3 violas, two straws, and an E. I also found 4 empty shells down at the very bottom of the 'tat face up, packed with substrate, I'm not sure if they belonged to anyone but they were all on the small side so I can only assume they were small crabs that didn't make it past their first molt. Luckily everyone seems to be adjusting just fine!
I split the crabs in no particular order and have 35 in the 217gl and 60 in the 1020gl (pics of the 217gl coming soon!)
I'll quit yapping now!
Here are a couple of pics! Excuse the reflection
Does anyone else see the two faces kissing in the wood piece in the background?
Trying to figure out why the temp/humidity reader isn't working
Can you spot the one hiding in one of the shells in the shell shop?
How many do you see?
