It was a fish bowl like this

only plastic. They laid it on its side and put moss inside. I thought it was an ingenious way to make a moss pit. You could see inside the pit so the crabs were still somewhat on display, and at the same time they had a nice little high humidity spot to hang out. Conditions for the crabs looked pretty good there as well. So far it's the best conditions I've ever seen pet store crabs kept in.

I've never been to a Petsmart that didn't use a plastic fish bowl for a moss pit. I wanted to do that but I cant find a plastic fish bowl, only glass.

When I started crabbing in June I got the idea for a fish bowl moss pit from my local petsmart. My crabs love it.

Id try a "learning" store or ask pet smart where to find one. I feel like I saw these at lakeshore and it's not actually a fish bowl but some sort of container that hold stuff like counting beads.

I didn't know it was so common.
I admit that I don't go to pet stores often. I won't even go into the store nearest me. The hermits are kept in deplorable conditions.

The Petsmart at The Quarry shopping center in Minneapolis does a great job with their crabs, too! I noticed the crabs had plenty of humidity and the temps were good, and the crabs were active. I gave kudos to the girl I saw working there, saying that this was a much better way to sell crabs because they were actually active and happy this way. I may also have mentioned to her to try upselling by selling proper hermit crab equipment - large tanks, heat pads, eco earth, etc. - rather than stupid critter carriers and gravel. She seemed to like the idea
That way the crabs are healthier *and* the stores make a greater profit.
But yeah, hooray Minnesota Petsmarts!
We are just more awesome up here, don't you think?

That's so great! I just stopped by the Petsmart by my house and they've got the largest aquatics section for a Petsmart in Florida. Their crabs are kept in pretty nice care compared to other pet stores. There's even two separate tanks to separate any aggressive crabs. I visit there so often that the employees recognize me

Glass is fine, just make sure your crabs have easy ways in and out.

I think it's just the weight of it. If it were me trying to put a heavy glass bowl in and out of the tank on a semi-regular basis when spot cleaning, I'd put it right through a tank side or bottom.
