New 40g
So I just brought home a 40g breeder tank!! Eek! I am really happy, the crabs are gonna love it. I was originally gonna purchase a 50g from craigslist but it didnt work out. Today I walked into petco trying to find a snow coat for my dog, and there was a $1 per gallon sale! I saved $80 and got a very nice tank. It is very wide and long and 1ft 5 " tall so pretty good size, and big enough to do some levels. However it is an open glass tank, so there is no lid. I looked at the screened lids they had available there and the largest one was 29g. So I was hoping someone could either give me DIY ideas for a lid, or point me to a website that sells aquarium lids. Also, this tank is gonna be a long process, I dont have any supplies for it yet. I will be doing all that in a couple of days. I saw some awesome things at Michaels that I am for sure going to buy, but I would really like some pics of inspiration from your setups so I know what to get and how I wanna decorate. So if you dont mind I would love to see em! Thanks!

Petco tanks are manufactured by Aqueon which also makes Versa-Top hinged glass lids for their tanks. DrsFosterandSmith.com carry sizes for a variety of the Versa-Tops but not for the 40B. Aqueon does manufacture a 40B glass lid so check out their website to see where you can find one locally or how to order one.

Another option is to carefully measure the inner lip of the tank and then have Home Depot/Lowe's custom cut glass or plexiglass to fit it (of course, you wouldn't have the advantage of the horizontal hinge on the Versa-Top). All you'd have to do is attach a handle allowing you lift up the lid. If you go the custom cut route, have a small square cut out at the two rear corners: this will offer access for tubing should you want bubblers in the pools and will also aid air circulation.
Of course, you can also make a customized screen lid. Unfortunately, screen lids for terrariums are based on a 36"Lx12"W footprint, not the wider 36x18 of the 40B. I'm sure Home Depot/Lowe's carry heavy-duty screening but also check out Ace Hardware as they do a lot of screen door /window repairs.

Re: New 40g
So I looked at the aqueon lids, and they are close to me, but sorry for sounding stupid. But I dont really understand how those lids work? I found the 40BR on the site and the dimensions of it are 35.2" x 9.1" x 1.3"
So do I have to cut it so it will fit my tank? I am just confused lol. Also someone said in the reviews that they ordered two 24" lids and put them on their 55 gal.
I went to petsmart as that was one of the stores that carries them and they sell 20" 24" and 30" so would I even be able to get one from them?
If this lid doesnt work out I am gonna go the custom cut glass and cut out areas for bubblers route. I want bubblers either way.

Re: New 40g
My guess is that there are other tanks with a similar footprint (length x width) as a 40 breeder?

The measurements you see are length x width x height for the lid.

Petco sells the glass tops for the 40 gallon breeder. Did they have any in stock?

I didnt see any. I didnt even find the tank I bought. I might just do the custom built one, it seems easiest and quickest.LucasBinx wrote:Petco sells the glass tops for the 40 gallon breeder. Did they have any in stock?
