New Feeding "Dishes"

Post by Kaleighshermies » Fri Feb 12, 2016 10:02 pm

I am re-doing one of my hermit crab tanks and I am making it easy for them to have food and water in one spot. I decided to make my own little "dishes" out of shells. After observing my hermit crabs and realizing how only one can really eat at a time with the shell dish I ended up making them into more of a buffet style so everyone can have the room to eat without pushing through each other. With the variety of shells I will be putting different types of food in them to give the hermies options to try different things.

I used these two shells and glued them together as shown.

Then I made a platform with popcicle sticks and glued them all around a piece of drift wood. (drift wood just decorating it up)

Then used this shell and added it on top of the drift wood again for decoration. What does everyone think?

It's cute, and original. I think that would only work in my teeny-small crab tank, my larger crabs would wreck it or bury it cause they do that to everything else anyways. I can't keep cute or nice things in my tanks. I like it, I made something similar, it was without the base, or wood decoration. Just shells silicones together like that, it dissapeared by morning because they buried it. I think yours it better thought out then my attempt was. I hope it works as planned, it's a neat buffet.

Wow thanks for the nice comments! My hermits are quite small so they should be able to keep it above sand!
I was also inspired once I ordered some home made hermit crab food from Etsy.com. The supplier's name is TheHappyHermitSupply (I believe) and she makes different meals to provide the hermit crabs through out the week. I ordered a sample of each and figured I could test out which one they like best with this set up.

It was a lot of fun to make and if I had more drift wood it would have been cool to make some for other members of the HCA. Hmmmm may have to buy some more drift wood!

Even if buried, I'm sure a slate "plate" (like a slate floor/roof tile) should keep it above the sub, plus I imagine the crabs would like to dig under the slate too!

But that looks amazing, your certainly got skills in the creativity department.

I have ordered food from her before, my crabs enjoyed diet number 1 and diet number 3. #1 was the favorite though. They didn't tKe much interest in the other options.

I was disappointed because I bought the large sample pack. I still offer it now and again.

Very cute! I might have to try and make one of those! I have mine lined up almost half of the tank against the glass ( lol I like each food in its own shell)

Go for it! I love it and it has stayed above the sand. When my phone charges up I will post a pic of it in the tank.

I don't know how to not have it sideways because the pic is correct in my files but comes out sideways when downloaded to get the image code

I apologize again for the side ways pictures. I have no idea why it does that because they are all downloaded correctly...
