Bamboo from Michaels?

Post by Pinchersparadise » Mon Feb 15, 2016 12:54 pm

My best friend has snakes, he has 4 to be exact! I've had hermit crabs longer than he's had his snakes, and we were discussing things that are tank safe. We were at a pet store and there was plastic bamboo looking sticks that you could add to your tank for the snake to hang on, but he said he could get bamboo for cheaper at Michaels. (They had springs and would stretch to the size of the tank like a perch)

I ordered natural raw bamboo online (and it cost me 3x the amount it would have cost me from Michaels). However I was under the impression that Michaels "natural ashland bamboo" was treated for it to last a long time making it not safe for animals.

I was concerned about him using it for snakes & I told him that it was treated and that he should be careful using it. But he hasn't had a problem with it since he got his first snake 1 year ago.

I tried searching this forum for more information on bamboo from Michaels, but I wasn't able to find anything - I'm new to the forums too, so it could have easily been operator error...

I was wondering if it is in fact unsafe & what makes it unsafe? He makes me feel completely stupid like I know nothing, but that's besides the point. I'm just wondering if I can in the future buy from Michaels and save money..

I would personally stay on the safe, and get all natural. Hermit crabs are usually VERY sensitive to chemicals. Is there a tag or something that says "all natural" if it doesn't, don't get it. If it does, still soak it in a water conditioner. (Your regular water routine). Hope this helps!
