HCA: Hermit Crab Association

I will soon be working on a background for my crabitat. But, I have a challenge. 1, I have to find a sturdy safe rocklike material. 2, I need to grow moss. LOTS OF MOSS. Why buy moss from a store when you can grow out the moss you find at home, and use the new moss that grows instead of the collected moss you started out with... so there are no pesticides or chemical runoff junk in there that would hurt them. Test 1 is to see if I can get moss to grow. Original moss is in a container by my window since they need light but not a lot. I mist it every time I think about it because moss likes humidity.

Future plans are to make a background with shelves and other kinds of places the moss can go. Anchoring the moss will be a wee challenge but I like challenges, so I'll probably end up growing it on the background in a separate area that I can keep highly humid..... bathroom maybe? That way they can climb on "rock", wood, and moss! I'll also be getting one of those hemp nets. It's such a good idea. What suggestions do any of you have for the moss growing? Am I on the right track? Or should I scrap it because pet store stuff is safer? Thanks!

I don't think it would be a safety issue at all. Though, If you want to grow moss, and want constant humidity it might be worth setting up a bubbler pool in the tank you where planning on using with the lid covered like we do for the crabbies. It would keep it constantly humid, and prevent your need to mist it constantly. As far as anchoring goes, for any tank in general, if you haven't filled the tank at all, or put anything in it I highly suggest corner guards. (A quick search should pull up several results.) But they go in the corners to you can attach and hang things easier.
