HCA: Hermit Crab Association

I don't have pics, but I was looking for a hamster wheel for my hermit crabs today at Petsmart but I'm not going to spend almost $20 on a tiny hamster wheel at Petsmart that's only $8 on Amazon. :roll:

Anyway, I got a hamster dust bath for my crabs to use as a shell shop! It looks bigger in my crabitat unfortunately because my crabitat is only 10 gallons so I must say goodbye to my all natural look. I put some of those circular blue plastic rock thingies for fish bowls in it and then put in the shells. It could also be used for moss or timothy day in case I want to add moss and then the shells in the future.

And as a new food bowl just to spice things up and make it easier to dump and clean, I got a ferret or hamster litter pan that fits perfectly in the corner of the tank.

Have you guys used these things? I thought it was pretty handy, I'm only 14 and I have over 1000 dollars because i used to have a booming pet sitting business, but I still hate spending money, LOL. I could go through Petsmart and find things that would work for hermit crabs for hours, LOL. I definitely need to upgrade after I move out!

Those 1000 will probably be great for uni tuition if you decide to do a tertiary education. My first semester alone for books was going to cost in excess of $400 au... welp. Its expensive.

I don't plan on going to college, I'll be putting that money towards a career as a dog trainer/pet sitter (more professionally than I do now)

Maybe for Christmas I'll ask for a 20 gallon tank. I definitely can afford one, but I don't know if I will be able to upgrade. However, for the sake of me and my crabs, a larger tank would be a lot better and I could add some more crabs to the mix.

Nothing wrong with saving money! You can find cheap used tanks on Craigslist. Just make sure your parents are OK with you doing that before you email anyone. You and an adult can meet at a police station or public parking lot to get the tank.

Good for you wanting to pursue your own business! I went to college, got $35k in debt, and a degree I'm not using. Now I run my own business. You don't need a degree in business, I don't! Maybe a couple classes here or there would be helpful in your field, but you definitely don't need a degree. Good luck!

I tried college. I finally figured out I had gone for all of the wrong reasons, and left. My first few jobs I was a babysitter and a waitress. I hated both, and particularly sucked at the latter. I decided to change, and went to a community college for Computer Aided Drafting and Design for a myriad of reasons. I poured myself into every detail, sat in on classes I technically wasn't taking (I've found teachers rarely mind as long as you're not disruptive), and told my teachers of my intention of getting a job ASAP. They helped me land an interview after only a year, and I was on the fast track. I got a certification after some independent study ($90). I got a 30% pay increase with my next job. Now I'm doing design work and have a patent pending

Remember various areas have small business alliances where they help promote each other and serve as resources to one another. You can get advice from people who've been there, and get (often free) advertising where you might not otherwise reach. Many will have events focusing on finance and marketing. Some will even have investors come in.

But back to crabland! How many crabs do you have? I'd love to see pictures.

You can still get the all natural look with the shell shop. Take a lot of leaves/driftwood/other natural matter and surround the sides of the shell shop with them. Line the inside with leaves as if they were tissue paper in a gift bag, and the shells were the gifts (which I guess in a sense they are).
