Crabitat Build Help Needed

Post by Oswin » Mon Aug 20, 2018 12:06 am

Hi! I'm planning out the changes to my crabitat while I wait for when I can finally order everything. I want to try and give my crabs the best that I can. So I have a few questions and want your thoughts on what I have planned so far. The tank is a 20 long.
Unless marked with a * I do not yet have the item. Most will not be marked . All items below have already been picked out.

EQUIPMENT
> Ultratherm Heat Mat
> UVA/UVB Light
> Hygrometer*
> Thermometer*
> Screen Lid [currently have a glass one that doesn't quite fit]

DECORATIONS
> Eco-Earth
> Coconut Hide*
> 5 Cholla Logs, 5"-6"
> Moss Bed [Shower Caddy + Frog Moss]
> Lizard Lounge [for climbing and for access to moss bed]
> Fake Vine for Reptiles [there's 6' of it]

FOOD STUFF
> Water Dishes* [Food-Safe plastic containers]
> Food Bowl*

Questions
1. Should I put rocks on the bottom of my water bowls? Anything else I should do for the water bowls?
2. I have an empty 5 gallon. Could I put it on top of the 20 to add a little more room for the crabs? It's not as wide as the 20, and only roughly half the length. How do I secure it? What do I do about the screen lid and light?
3. Any other decorations you would recommend?

i am in the same boat you are as far as decorating so I look fwd to any responses. I currently have rocks and tiny shells in my pools but I want to change that at some point and use craft mesh as a ramp with maybe the stones attached for a way out. I also want to add more foliage for hiding...I added a little last night and already both crabs are utilizing the long vine and cork wood (or whatever it’s called). Both are hiding/digging behind it all. Good luck with it all and post pics because I am always looking for ideas!

I ordered my thermometers from Amazon. It was a digital one with a probe that hangs in the tank for $20. Most people use the ones from walmart in the garden section, they're thermometer/hygrometer gauges that are about $5.
For the screen lid, there's some on amazon for a 20 gal long that are about $15. You can also use an egg crate light diffuser from home depot, or good ole seran wrap.
Coconut hides and cholla wood i also ordered from amazon, i found a site that has 6 cholla wood pieces (each are about 6 inches long) for $9 with free shipping. The cocohuts were $8 for two. One is medium and one is large.

I used tupperware bowls for pools. I doubled them up to make water changes easier. I stole @Stella's idea and used craft mesh inside the bowl. But for my first set i had rocks in the bottom. i glued some on the side of the bowl then added some on the bottom of the bowl just to be safe.

If you need more items for them to climb, i use aquarium decor. They have some on amazon (yes, i know. but i love that site! ) that looks like wood and it's fairly cheap. My crabs love it!

Good luck with the remodel, share pics!

I already have my thermometers, coconut hut, and bowls, but thanks! I use Amazon a lot too xD All the supplies listed above I've picked out and found sellers, they're just waiting in my cart for me to get enough money to purchase lol

I'll have to look at some aquarium decor. So far I haven't seen anything I've liked but I'll keep an eye out all the same.

I'll be sure to post pictures!
