Hey everyone!
I am planning out my 125 gallon crabitat that I'll be building next weekend. One thing that I'd like to do this time around is provide a much deeper pool with the extra space that I usually can't do. I had a thought about using a 2.5 gallon aquarium for pools (1 of fresh the other for salt), but since it's so large, I want to limit how many times I have to pull them out for cleaning.
So, I thought about the idea of filtering them. I'm sure this has been done before, but I just can't seem to find an idea that is what I'm thinking in my head. I found a few filters that can clip on the edge of the 2.5 gallon and filter small amounts of water, but, how safe is that to have in the tank with the crabs having access? Am I just being an overprotective & concerned crab dad?
What ideas do you guys have?
Thanks!

Re: Pool & Filter Help
This is what I did with my filtered pools. They are both 2.5 gallon pools. So far so good.i kept them above ground and have been doing partial water changes every two weeks and full changes monthly.

AussieJJDude and I covered a lot of technical ground in that thread with the upkeep. My strawberries really love the salt pool.

Thank curly! I'm far from the king. I just see something and think that would be cool and fun to do! Anyone can do it if they have the space, and the time to research and build it.

Nah, I agree with Curly. You picked up the process of water cycling rather quickly, dare to say quicker than many aquarists.Motörcrab wrote:Thank curly! I'm far from the king. One of these days, I really want to set up a guide for pools - an indepth one. :/ Eventually, it's a useful thing and can help many crabbers understand water chemistry.

Thanks, you helped me out a lot with all the technical water stuff.aussieJJDude wrote: ↑Thu Dec 12, 2019 6:33 amOne of these days, I really want to set up a guide for pools - an indepth one. :/ Eventually, it's a useful thing and can help many crabbers understand water chemistry.
Let me know when you want to work on guide for cycled pools. Fleabag and I would like to help! We recently procured two 75 gallon tanks and want to decommission our 30 gallon. Maybe it was the 20 tall? Anyway we want to set up another 75 and give our crabs more room. With the 75 we will more than likely add fresh and salt pools to that one. I can get better pictures of the build process and set up for a guide. With it being cold here in Pennsylvania we probably won't get to this build until March at the earliest. So we have time to plan something if you want.
I like sharing this when questions about pools show up. Courtney Iris Karr, The Cholla Queen made this presentation for Crab Con this year. She goes into great detail about creating bioacive pools and other tank features. It's a lot of information in 40 minutes. I probably watched the water part ten times while building my pools. Watching this presentation is what made me want to to go with cycled pools in the first place. This is what I used as my guideline for building my pools and the parameters to keep the water.
