second level

Post by crabs_lex » Fri Sep 04, 2020 8:49 am

i currently have 2 nets in the tank a triangular one i the corner and a rectangular one in the middle (which is connected to the other with a wooden bridge)
i still feel like my crabitat doesn’t have enough things to climb because there is a big bare spot on the walls
so does by one have other ideas for maybe another second level like the egg crate (not sure where to get or how to use)
i also have very small pieces of cholla wood but don’t know how to use them because they are short like maybe 6 inches long
i also got popsicle sticks to make a bridge for them

Egg crate is commonly sold as a light diffuser panel in hardware stores like Lowe's.

As far as how to use. A simple set of diagonal side cuts or "Dikes" as they used to be called before people corrupted the word works very well at cutting the panels.

Then it can be zip tied together if you need to make structures. I and others like to cover it with craft mesh (plastic canvas) from craft stores like hobby lobby for color and easier grip. It can also be zip tied.

I use the substrate to hold the egg crate up by burying it, but I've seen it siliconed as well.

All that said, there are many methods to build levels.. I recently just added a couple of jute wrapped tension rods with a net between them and a vine woven around.

Both of my crabs are down at the moment so I have no idea if they like the new tension rod net, but the egg crate level was a hit for the two days after I put it up before they went down.. lol
The varying light levels make it tough to get a good picImage

I have egg crate on the back wall of my tank too. I've zip tied two hamster wheels to it. I also bought little plastic dollar store containers with holes in the sides, and attached them to the egg crate. I put shells in all of them, and a coco-hut in one. The crabbies love to hide among the shells and sleep up there.

Thanks! I wanted to surround the sides and back with egg crate for hanging stuff like CrabbyLover77 said, but I added it after there were already crabs and I didn't want to do too much. I'm hoping to move out of this tiny apartment into a house early next year. When I do I'll likely get a bigger tank and set it up that way.

I love your egg crate ramp! Wish I would have thought of something like that. My tank is only 12" wide though, so it's tough to get stuff like that to fit. Image

Sure! Image
I took pics of the left, middle, and right sides. You'll see the blue and white containers zip tied to the egg crate. I only paid $1 for a set of 3! I bought the plastic risers in each corner on Amazon. Then I attached craft mesh and Cholla wood on each to make them easy to climb. I like the risers because they give the crabs climbing room, but are completely open underneath too.ImageImageImageImage

@CrabbyLover77

The trick with the ramp, is to cut the egg crate at the angle you want it to sit at so when you pull the zip ties tight, it draws the ramp to the angle you want.

Believe it or not, my tank is 12" wide as well. It's a 20 gal H.

I unfortunately don't have room for a bigger standard tank ( max length wise 24 inches, width I could go to like 14 maybe 15 inches instead of 12 but there isn't any that size). I have all sorts of open space above, but don't have a work area to build a frame for a second level.. If I could get ahold of a 30 gal extra high it would fit well and give me more vertical room to build levels.. lol.

I really like all the hanging fixtures on the egg crate you have. That's a great way to get the hamster wheels out of the way. I wish I had just a little more room so I could fit a wheel in there.

Oh wow, your tank looks bigger in the pic!
And thanks! The egg crate def keeps the wheels outta the way which is nice. Every night, around 11pm, at least one crabby is doing their exercise on the bigger wheel lol. When I had my 20 gal long, I had room for a wheel, but only the 4.5" mini wheel. My biggest crab liked to use it, but he could barely fit lol.
