Affixing fish net

Post by Guest » Fri Aug 26, 2005 9:32 pm

How is the best way of going about putting up fish net? I bought fish net and cut it to size, and I bought a "mixed pack" of suction cups, figuring some of them would work out for holding it up... but none of them really are right. The hooks on them are either too large, or metal (sharp looking too), or they don't have a hook on them at all...

If you use suction cups, how do you affix the net to the suction cups so it doesn't just fall off?

Well I know a lady and glued the net to the suction cups and then stuck them up. My cups wouldn't hold my net up so I stuck some out of the top of the tank and they climb that. They can't get out but they climb to the top and hang like they're in the circus. ... I think you could bend the metal hooks to hold the net. Like round it or make it a loop and slide the net inside..... try that.. might work...

Although they aren't attractive, try the white plastic "locking" suction hooks. I found them at the Dollar Tree (thanks to a tip from a fellow crabber, thanks Sandy :D ).

I got my suction cups in the bathroom section of Target, they are the locking kind and are clear. I haven't had any crab pull it off yet

I use the metal hook suction cups, I bend them over and feel them carefully, if they seem sharp at all I use a metal file on them or wrap them in hemp twine.

I had just come on to ask the very same ? I'll have to go look for the locking ones b/c I know my soap dish with regular suction cups kept falling off so I finally gave up on it.

One more thing though...do I need to boil or wash the fish net in some way? I got a scrap piece from Naples. TIA

I got really large, all silicone and plastic suction cups at Michael's for $2.99 a pair. It takes them a while, but every so often, the crabs will pop one off the side of the tank. They're very strong and work great to hold the net, though.

They're made for hanging wreaths.

I didn't realize there was such a variety in suction cups, I guess! :)

Wow, a lot of great ideas here. Now I will have to go shopping. Darn!

I have the same locking suction cups as Vicki. I got mine at Walmart though. They STILL weren't sticking very well, so I got some aquarium silicone and kind of glued around the suction cups so they don't keep falling off. I did the same thing with my plants that have suction cups. Every now and then, one will still let loose, but nowhere near as often as before I "glued" them fast.

I was going to ask same question also. Since that's been answered, here is one more question (i wont start a new thread).

Where do those of you that have plexi glass get it? We have a Tap Plastics (expensive) or does local home improvement ie..HD or Lowes have it?

Thanks

Lowes or Home Depot should have it at reasonable prices. They will usually custom cut it to size for you as well, or drill holes if necessary.

I got regular SMALL suction cup holding my net up. I took the hook off of it and use fishing line or any string and tied ot to the little round peice. So far so good hasnt fallen yet and it has had some big crabs climb up it so...

Another think you can do is attatch the suction cups to the outside and use string to go up and over the top. Just make sure that the lid is secure!

Missy I went to tap plastics out here. It depends on the thickness you need. When I did the 55g for the top O got it like an inch thick and it was $45 for the top. So try for something thinner if thats too much

Missy, I got mine from a small "old-time" hardware store. My local Home Depot has it, but they don't cut it. For a 10 gallon, it cost me $6.35 and my hubby drilled the holes for me. It isn't really thick, but works fine.
