I was in a pet store when I saw this product. Does anyone know if it is safe. It's called:
Hermit Crab Deodorizing Spray

Contents: Purified Water, Natural Enzymes, Beneficial Bacteria. 4 ounces (113 ml) per hand sprayer bottle.

says on site:
Discourages toxic ammonia buildup in hermit crab water, plus it improves the hygiene of both water and sand.

Sounds like you just spray it in the tank. Anyone know about this stuff? Is it safe?

I would really like to know what beneficial bacteria and natural enzymes are. I mean, as long as you change your water regularly you shouldn't have ammonia build-up. Clean tanks shouldn't have much of a smell anyhow, maybe a slight damp sandy smell, but not a bad one.

It sounds to me like a clevery-packaged way to empty your wallet. ;) If you change the water in the dishes once a week, that's good enough, and healthy tanks don't smell bad, just like ms_hecubus said. :)

welll my crabitat smells like wet sand and the climbing background smells like dirt, and in a dorm room I can not have any smell considering the no pets alowed policy.
I am more wondering if you think that the product is safe to use, seeing as there are many supposed crab products that are not so good for them ( for example certain hermit crab food products.) The last thing I want to do is spray something in that will kill them.

definitely sounds like a gimmick, trying to cash in on the recent popularity of these critters.

Can you simply air out the tank a bit, or perhaps just the background?

I'd say it's not inconceivable that it works as described, but if you take care of your tank, it probably shouldn't be needed. It's mainly a way to seperate people from their money.

My tank (about 2.5-3 months old) just has a slight earthy smell from the forest bedding. You can only smell it if you're standing right over the tank with the lid open.

My Dad had brought this product, and used it once. (I did not want to and saw no need for such a product) well the product made things smell much WORSE! The smell that the product created was so bad I could not sleep in my room that night. I felt bad for the crabs!

Airing out the tank sounds like a good idea. I use a small but powerful fan every now and then to air out the tank.
