My cheapo little airstone in the saltwater pool has done wonders for the humidty in my tank.

EDITED:
oops... sorry... guess this didn't help much.

I think waterfalls are cool though. Maybe someday I'd get one. I also do like the looks of the DIY himidifier thingie and it seemed to work well for many people.

Oh yeah.... i paid like 1.50 for 2 litle air stones and my humidity went from around 60% which i was freaking out about to 90% with the airstone and i have to keep the tank cracked an inch on top now i only have a 20 long though i would use 2 airstones for anything bigger though......

I have airstones in the 40 breeder and no problem with humidty. I am putting togather the 30 gallon and want to go with one of the above.

I agree you should you airstones and they are cheaper but those volcanos are awsome looking. I want one (just to have my hum. is fine) and my husband says that my hermits dont need a volcano.

I know someone has a fogger in their tank and it looks so cool but I cant find the post. I may go with a fogger and airstones.
I was wondering if there is anything problem with the volcanos concerning the hermits like getting stuck in holes are anything.

I just got one recently and it looks simply awsome when it's running. I use it mostly right after I've had the lid off for a while, like doing crabitat maintenance, to help the humidity rebound. And my kids are usually begging me to turn it on...they think the fog from the volcano is "cool".

I wouldn't want to count on it for constant humidity as it would run out of water in a few hours of constant use...maybe on a timer.

I also wouldn't worry too much over a crab getting stuck...it'd be quite a climb just to reach the top! None of mine have even attempted climbing it yet...at least not when I'm around! A crab might get stuck in the top if it were littlier than a small...anything bigger wouldn't be a problem in my opinion.

Check out this review of it: http://www.crabbytalk.com/03082005/robi ... e-volcano/

Pro's of the volcano - It's incredibly cool!, makes a huge cave hideout, and helps boost humidity when needed.

Con's - It would run out of water too fast for constant use.

I'd use an air stone in a water dish which is just as effective at raising the humidity or maybe the DIY humidifier which I haven't tried yet.

Nice link. I made a DIY humidifier I used 3 tubes and a large pump it was not enough to raise the humdity in my 40 breeder the air stones work much better for me.

We made a "fogger" using a double pump and a twist and lock type tupperware container full of seas sponges and have pretty good luck maintaining humidity. We've also had decent luck with a simpler airpump and airstones but have found that a little more difficult to maintain due to the smaller size of our water dishes.

*EDIT*

If you decide to make a fogger, make sure the sealant you use says it's aquarium safe. I'm not sure if the other stuff is toxic to crabbies, but most of the stuff we looked at said it wasn't, so I'd be wary there.

exoterra waterfall

Post by Guest » Tue Mar 14, 2006 11:19 pm

I have a Exo-Terra waterfall (medium) in a 29 gal. It isn't tacky really (poly-resin?) but is smells like that resin stuff. Anyways, in the middle section of the waterfall there is a special little compartment for the fogger. I have the whole set up. I don't use the fogger always because it drains water rather quickly. I don't really need the extra humidity anyways. The waterfall is on constantly. My crabs LOVE it. The texture is perfect for them to climb all over. The problem is that the whole set-up (waterfall, water pump, and fogger) has a retail value of aprox. $100-120. Luckilily I work at a petstore and get a discount. I should really get some pics online.
