D.I.Y. Rope Ladder?

Post by Guest » Wed Dec 27, 2006 6:05 pm

I'm feeling in a really hermit-ish mood right now, so I decided to brainstorm some ideas for DIY Projects. What I came up with:

- Second level
- Rope/yarn/string ladder for climbing, possibly up to the second level
- Re-organize the tank ( not really a DIY, but it works)

Now I have some questions for you profesionals out there:

I have a 10 gallon tank, what should I do for a second level? (Some sort of shower caddy? Where would I get this?) For the ladder, is yarn ok to use? Or would it be harmfull to the crabs?

For a second level, I used a clear, placstic shower caddy I picked up at Target. It was $5 or $6 and in the shower curtain isle.

I am not sure about yarn, it may contain dyes in it that if ingested may prove to be fatal. Plus I think it can fall apart too easily and may get a crabbie leg stuck and who knows, the crab may fight to get out of it and snap, lost a limb...not worth it. I would try some hemp string as I do not think there are dyes in it. Braid several layers TIGHTLY so it can be thick and no crabbies limbs getting stuck and snapped off. Maybe someone can chime in on that one. You can try the fishing dept in Walmart, maybe they sell replacement fish netting, you can use that instead.

Oooh, ok! That works well seeing as I have a gift card to Target. And I happen to have some hemp lying around also, so I'll be able to use that. Thanks a lot!

I knitted my second levels with jute cord which I picked up at a dollarstore. With the help of my mom, I was able to knit a net in the shape of an isoceles triangle with a ladder attached.

As for the shower caddy, I found a perfect one (perfect depth and everything to put moss in) at the dollarstore! So if you want to save money, you could check out any dollarstores you have near you. :)

Have fun! I love it when I get into a hermit-ish mood. lol

for my 2nd level i use suction cups and screen door screen. i cut it to size and for the "ladder" i ahd one of those horrible abusive cages with the wire sides in the shape of a cylender and I turned it upside down and burried it as far as I could and my crabs can climb up it and get to the top.

Dude? Why do you have hemp laying around? lol

Just kidding.

I use a plastic storage bin for my second level and attached coconut fiber to each side as well as a plastic vine.
